NISEE MADE
Anyone who knows me (or visits my blog) can attest to the fact that I’m enamored by all things sweet and whimsical. Yesterday’s post probably clued you in on my love of illustration too. So when I found out that today’s contributor combines all of these aspects in her work, I was so excited to share with you guys.
Denise Holmes is a graduate of The School of The Art Institute of Chicago and founded Nisee Made earlier this year. She’s off to a great start as her work has been featured all over the world wide web. Passionate about drawing, paper, vintage goods and children’s books you can easily see their influence on Denise’s lovely illustrations. In addition to custom paper goods tailored to each clients style, Nisee Made is also offering a 2010 calendar that is worthy of your wall space. This adorable calendar showcases all twelve months surrounded by a pretty pink forest with a picnicking elephant. So you can bet I’m loving it right? It sealed the deal that Denise is my kind of girl when i read she lives in a pink house in New Orleans

definitely Ramona Quimby!
No holiday parties as my husband and I run our own business, but lots of celebration. We are empty nesters–one son is married with a three-year-old daughter and 15-month-old son, the other son is being deployed to Afghanistan by the South Carolina National Guard in late January, and our 24-year-old daughter is engaged to be married in May. So for us, this holiday brings about some significant changes. Next year, there will be a new son-in-law whom we adore and there will be an empty place at the Christmas table until Dustin returns from Afghanistan. So, our holiday parties will take place at Emily’s wedding in May and when Dustin comes marching home!
No question about my all-time favorite fictional character from children’s literature . . . The Velveteen Rabbit. I try to be my authentic self, and that means “becoming” real by allowing yourself to be hugged and squeezed and not squeaking too loudly.
I played with Barbie ALOT, I colored in her books, I worked out to her videos and made up some awesomely gnarly scenarios with her and her friends.
And now I look back and think..
” Wow, if that girl doesn’t scream Multiple Personality Disorder” then I don’t know who does. And damn, she pulls it off so gracefully”
Clementine and Mungo (both are such sweet and creative characters), this book was discovered in reading to my 5 yr old daughter, our favorite part of the day!
My favourite character was Arthur. The show was a like an educational soap for little kids. Sometimes I still watch it because it puts a smile on my face!
Does George Kirrin count? She is my absolute favourite … maybe because I am so much like her! Jemima Rooper was the PERFECT choice to portray her …
PS: That calendar is GORGEOUS!
Amelia Bedelia – hilarious! The play on words in those books was great – Amelia created the worst disasters from misunderstandings over and over. Loved it. Still do and hope my daughter enjoys those books someday.
I always loved Nancy Drew. I even had a fan club.
My favourite-ever fictional character was Amelia Badelia. I loved that she was silly and imperfect and all things that children should aspire to be. I no longer have any of those books, so all that lives on is very fond and loving memories of flipping those thick pages and taking in every inch of the beautiful illustrations.
Your calendar is lovely and I would like nothing more than for it to be my one and only for 2010.
I loved the Ramona books. She was precocious and funny and it always made me chuckle to picture her with egg in her hair.
Winnie the Pooh–sincere, happy with just his friends & some honey, and comfortable in his own skin.
Teo was so sweet
Really Rosie. She’s got moxie.
Amelia Bedilia! I always thought she was so creative and I loved seeing what solution she would come up next! She inspired me to think outside of the box and never see just one path to a solution. :) We even named our puppy Mia after her!
Eric! From Dr. Seuss’s The King’s Stilts. My dad and I read this over and over when I was little, and I really love everything about this story.
I loved anything by Roald Dahl, but if I had to choose a favorite, it would have to be Matilda. It’s easy to feel helpless and out of control when you are little, but Matilda could really take care of herself.
I had a very unhealthy obsession with Curious George when I was a child! Thankfully, I got over it!
Alvin from Alvin and the Chipmunks (YEA for come backs!). I loved the cartoon and had (and still enjoy) many vinyl albums. Is anything better than “Leader of the Pack” by the Chipmunks? Not much.
Mr. Dressup! Always watched him growing up and I loved his crafts!
Angelina the Ballerina
i miss my old friend : )
Barbar was definitely my brother’s favorite as well. He received a stuffed elephant from a policeman when my mom was speeding on Easter morning. He instantly named him Babar, which was then quickly shortened to “Beebs.” Beebs had his own personality, and even his own personalized voice. My brother could recreate the voice up until puberty, and as much as he will deny it Beebs was still a pretty huge part of his life up until then. Every time we went to the library, my brother would always walk out with at least one Babar book, and as there are not so many he reread many over and over again…. but enough about him!
My favorite fictional character would be very difficult to choose, as I usually staggered out of the library with a stack of books as tall as me, but one sticks out in my mind as being especially dear to my heart; Carl the Rottweiler from Alexandra Day’s series of beautiful children’s picture books.
It was he who inspired my love for dogs, Rottweilers in particular., and he who filled in as my imaginary pet puppy for all the years in which I have been unable to have a real one of my own.
I love Eloise!!!! How much fun that would be to live on the top floor of the Plaza Hotel, causing mischief and roaming the hotel for new adventures! And who wouldn’t want her little dog, Weenie, and a turtle named Skipperdee! I adore all of the illustrations, I wish I had the talent of Hilary Knight. I think Eloise brings out the adventurous kid in me .:)
always thought the pink panther was pretty cool.
“Harold and the Purple Crayon” allowed be to believe in what is possible. You can great and color your world in some many possible ways. Creativity can take you to new worlds.
My favorite fictional childrens charcter is Madeline. She’s unique in a setting that encourages conformity and I adore how she proudly shows everyone her scar! You go girl!
As odd as this may seem, Nancy Drew. And not the new Nancy, but the original 1930s classic Nancy. I think it was the beginning of my love for all things vintage :) I loved old books and I loved her independence and mystery.
The Peanuts Gang!
The Berenstein bears..Im sure I just butchered the name, but is been so long since Ive had one of their books in my hand. They were so awesome, I loved reading every single story and learning a lesson in each one!
oh madeline!! she definitely has captured my heart:) and i now even love her more so because my new babie niece is named madeline!
Maja the Bee of course :-) Perhaps by accident, but we have much in common – my parents named me after her!
Mr Popper of Mr Popper’s Penguins, by Richard Atwater. Mr Popper was a daydreamer and loved animals, which I could identify with. In creating the perfect environment for his penguin pets, he was extremely creative and inventive (which appealed to the little inventor in me, who always wanted to do crazy things come Science Fair time, which my parents always made me scale back). I loved that at the end of the book, Mr Popper’s dream of travel was realized, as well. He’s an unusual character to identify so highly with, but that book was one of my absolute favorites.
I loved Mary Poppins. She was practically perfect in every way!
Oh, does this bring back memories! I absolutely adored Amelia Bedelia!
I loved Frankenstein!
This is gorgeous! My absolute favorites was Amelia Bedelia and Thing 1 + Thing 2.
the pokey little puppy. He was so cute yet so mischevious…I learned alot from him!
I adored Madeline and wanted to visit Paris ever since I was little!
I love Cinderella, I think everyone appreciates a rags-to-riches story!
I always loved the characters that were extra small, so they could bathe in teacups or use buttons as shields. Characters like The Littles, Stewart Little, Thumbilina, The Indian in the Cupboard, and so on. I just loved the idea of having a small friend that I could build houses for and furnish with matchbooks and postage stamp art.
I don’t remember having a fave character from a book or movie. But I made up my own imaginary character and apparently, according to my mom, I liked him a lot. It was a whale. And he was usually in the bathtub while I went to school.
I love piglet from Winnie the Pooh, he’s so cute and little and pink.
I loved Paddington Bear.
