Anne Sylte Bloom is a self claimed serial do-it-yourselfer as evidenced not only by her hobbies but her business Seattle Sundries. Being a teacher, 4H leader, vegetable grower, bag-pipe player, mother and soapmaker make for quite the Renaissance woman! Seattle Sundries is a perfect combination of chemistry and creativity for Anne as she uses her talents to make spectacular soaps. Doing it all herself, Anne enjoys all aspects of her business from coming up with the concept for a new soap, blending scents and textures, designing labels and packaging, to photographing and marketing her products.

And her soaps are quite the multi-taskers themselves! Having made soaps since the early 90s, Anne has learned about various ingredients and in her words, “how they improve our product, effect our bodies, and impact our world.”  Instead of using synthetic materials that are inexpensive and harsh, Seattle Sundries soaps are made of only pure essential oils and natural colorants. Each bar will leave your skin clean and fresh all while being environmentally responsible. Not only are the soaps themselves beautiful, but their simple tins and vintage inspired labels make them pretty enough to leave out in the bathroom. A simple spool of twine could tie together several making the perfect gift as well.  Can’t ask much more from your bar of soap now can you?

Miss Lindsey, our Honorary Ambassador of Sunshine and Weekend Editor, seeks gratitude every day and believes life is a celebration. She blogs about creative, inspiring and beautiful finds at her blog, GreatFull Day.

Estee Lauder’s Beautiful perfume. it’s the fragrance my mom wore for years when i was growing up. it reminds me of sitting on her floor watching her get ready for an evening out…the swish of a dress on pantyhose, a sparkly earring, and the sound of heels on the floor…

My hairdresser (are they still called that?) turned me on to this product and every morning, when I use it, I’m transported back to this little shop in Leavenworth, WA (both the product’s name/brand AND the shop’s name escapes me right now) that I absolutely love – they sell all manner of French soaps and the smells mix together to create this amazing scent. I don’t always buy something when I’m there but I always have to go in, every time I’m in Leavenworth (or even just passing through!) for the smell… Now I get it every morning. It’s amazing.

Sometimes, when I take a walk in the morning, I’ll smell something like ham or bacon wafting from a home just waking up. It always reminds me of when my family would go visit my grandparents in their old farmhouse, and my grandmother would have such wonderful breakfasts prepared for us in the morning. It brings back feelings of warmth and love.

    Nicci says:

The smell of my grandmother- I guess she would have been the only one that knew what she put on. It was just the most comforting smell. Even when she was dying she still smelled the same. It brought me comfort but sometimes I smell it now that she is gone. It is a smell if I could bottle I would. It gives me comfort, warmth, peace and love.

The smell of sheets that have been dried on the clothes line reminds me of helping my mom hang the laundry outside in the summer time when I was very young – i would wiggle my way inside a sheet and stand there for a little while so I could feel the cool fabric on my skin in the summer heat.

the smell of Pineapples definatly sparks memories for me. I HATE PINAPPLES! dont ask me why, but i do. my sister just so happens to looove pineapples. when i smell one, it brings me back to the days when my parents would slice a pineapple, and give one to all my siblings. as everyone slobbered over themselves eating their slice, i would watch in disgust and secretly pass my slice to my sister. to this day, we still laugh about it… and i still cant stomach pineapples :)

    TB says:

The scent of the fresh flowers at Pike Place Market bring back sweet memories of my son. He experienced Pike Place when his grandmother and great grandmother came up from Texas to meet him when he was only two weeks old. One of the florists fell in love with him and gave me a white lily to let him smell it. I will always remember how he gazed so intently at that beautiful white lily with wide open eyes and pouty little lips as if mesmerized by the beauty thereof.
He never visited Pike Place again as he died unexpectedly from two undiagnosed congenital heart defects only a week later. In the summer whenever I visit Pike Place I will buy a single white lily to place on his grave, as a reminder of that sweet memory we once shared.

This is weird but every time I smell something musty it reminds me of the Pirates of the Carribean ride at Disneyland and then I’m instantly a child again running through the park with my E tickets. Childhood was bliss.

I spent my 23rd birthday in France with a friend. She gave me this lovely grapefruit peppermint bubble bath that I adored. When I got back, I used it sparingly to make it last. I have tried many citrus/mint combo products since then, but I would love to get my hands on another bottle because it was really special; and would remind me of that trip and that time in my life.

  23. 123
    Dana says:

The smell of leather is very special to me. When I was a little girl, and my parents would go out at night they would leave me and my brother with a baby sitter to put us to bed. I always knew that they were safetly home when my mom would come into my room, gently wake me up, and give me a giant hug. I was half asleep, but I would breath in the wonderful smell of her cold leather coat, and ever since the smell of leather has given me memories of love, comfort, and my mother!

    Laurie says:

I have a box of a few of my mom’s personal things. (She died in 1987 when I was 33) I was blown away at the memories that flew out of one of her handbags that I kept when I unzipped it a few years ago – It still smelled faintly of Clorets,(breath mints), cigarettes, and her favorite perfume. All mixed together but yet individually somehow. It reminded me so much of the essence of her, her actual self, since after all these years it was something almost tangible of her. Plus the overwhelming memories of mom’s purse opening up for me when I needed a tissue, or a dollar or a quarter – or a breath mint!

  26. 126
    Amanda says:

The smell of the beach sparks so many memories of growing up in Rhode Island and spending entire days at the beach playing in the water and the sand with friends and family. It also reminds me of going to college on the water and all the runs I took along the beach.

    fawn says:

I am haunted by two “Ghosts of Smell”.

The first is a combination of bread, lead paint, and St. Ives hand lotion, which reminds me of my grandparents’ kitchen. As I child, I spent time there shelling garden fresh peas, drying dishes, and getting my hair washed in the sink. It’s been many years since they passed away, but just one whiff of one of these elements brings them to my mind and heart immediately.

The second ghost is a mix of frigid December air and burning paper. To me this is a beautiful smell, because it transports me to Tian Shan mountains where I spent time in the Peace Corps. When I am visited by this ghost, I feel as if I’m walking to the old school building where I taught. Faces of my beloved students flash before my eyes.

Thank you for a chance at these schnazzy soaps!

  31. 131
    Emma Wallace says:

I love that smell that comes right before dark in the summertime, kind of green and a bit damp. It makes me think of being a child at my grandparents’ house, running around, catching fireflies!

  32. 132
    Jenni says:

Burning embers. It reminds me of that first smell of winter. The days spent laughing as we slid down the hill with our dad, our mom watching from the porch ready with warm hot chocolate, the tromp through the snow out to the woodpile where my dad would hand me a lighter log so I could help out. The spark as the wood hit the roaring fire and the warm burn as the fire melted away the cold and lit our smiling faces.

  33. 133
    Kelly says:

The smell of burning leaves up high in the mountains of Jamaica brings back too many memories for me. Jamaica feels like home to me, so when I get a whiff of something that conjures up those burning leaves, I feel that incredible feeling you only get when coming home.

    becca says:

the smell of coffee on someone reminds me of my grandmother. she is just such a loving soul, never a bad word to say about anyone, so tolerant and so giving. i only recently realized her insistance at being the last one to shower in the house (“because i love knowing i’m the cleanest one here!” was her excuse!) was a thinly veiled act of kindness–it is always the last person to shower for whom the hot water runs out! in this and many ways, she was so giving and has taught me how to be the best kind of person. and she’s always drinking coffee. black, every hour of the day. we used to tell her that coffee ran through her veins. i’ve always associated the smell of coffee on a person with my grandmother–and never understood why it was a scent people wanted to mask with gum and breath fresheners!

*interesting side-notes: 1. i’ve also always inhabited cafes on all my off times. i’m just now realizing maybe this is why they’ve always felt like home! 2. my grandmother lives in seattle, too! out on mercer island. :) :) :)
