These days being eco-friendly is as trendy as it is necessary—and that is a good thing! Being good to the earth is admirable no matter the reason and January is the perfect time to reevaluate your ecological footprint. Last year I vowed to eliminate my addiction to plastic water bottles—the convenience just had me hooked. While I have yet to completely ditch this habit, I’ve definitely improved in the area. This year I’m hoping to continue that effort and expand my green living.
As a brown bagger myself, I know first hand that bringing your lunch is a great way to save money and eliminate waste. Not actually using brown paper bags is of course the first step! Second you can ditch your disposable plastic baggies too. Heather Jacobs and Leslie Sarracino came up with an eco-friendly replacement for those convenient reclosable bags. Their company Graze Organic offers the solution with one hundred percent organic cotton and muslin resealable bags that are as cute as they are responsible. Adorable artwork adorns each bag and is silkscreened by hand with water based ink. By keeping their operations local and using these natural options Graze’s ecological footprint remains small. Best of all after your initial purchase of these bags not only will you be moving to greener pastures but you’ll save money too. After a few uses you just throw ‘em in the washing machine and reuse and reuse and reuse. It’s an easy way to go green this year!

less plastic and more biodegradable paper.
and people curl their noses at this one, but it honestly ain’t that bad… especially if you live alone:
if it’s yellow, let it mellow. if it’s brown, flush it down.
whether you live by it or not, it’s still fun to say.
I resolve to have more lights out parties with my friends. We started doing this last year where somebody yells “LIGHTS OUT!!” and we turn off all the electronics and lights and chat in the dark. It sounds kind of goofy, but it is a way to save energy and also initiate conversations without all the distractions.
my “green” resolution is to remember to use my re-usuable bags more often and winning this set would help with the kids lunches – they already have very “green” lunches – from the insulated totes that they use to the re-usuable water containers, and sandwich holders – but still haven’t found anything great to put the extra snacks and/or goodies in
My “green” resolution is to have a garden this year. Last year we were part of a CSA and this year we would like to take it a step further and grow our own vegetables.
i’m actually trying to write a thesis in environmental sociology… so my “green” resolution would have to be getting passionate about what i’m doing again. that is, continue to learn more and talk to others about energy, “clean” energy, and decreasing consumption by changing our lifestyles (not just our products).
To stop mindlessly purchasing items. Before I buy something, anything, I ask myself – do I need this? do I love it? how long will it last? how often will I use it? will it end up in the garbage any time soon? Fewer things in the landfill and more money in my pocket!
We’ve been slowly “greening” our lifestyle over the past few years – switching to CFLs, reducing our plastic baggie usage to 2 boxes per year, joining a CSA, reusing or buying used instead of new things. This year, my resolution is to make choices in our everyday food buying – beyond veggies – which are more sustainable. Supporting local (localish… we live in a big city) and organic farmers by making our meat and dairy purchases direct from the farm is our biggest green goal this year. It is going to mean radically changing how we eat, how we buy, and how we think about our food. It’s an exciting process, and one which we hope will help small, family farms stay just that – small, family run farms, where the farmers can ensure that their animals are kept healthy, happy, and are allowed to roam.
my husband and i will be cloth-diapering our first-born starting in june! this pregnancy has really given me the chance to embrace my inner hippie – i’m eating better, living better, and using less whenever possible. there’s a very real reason for me to try and make the world a better place now that we have a little one on the way!
Basic recycling and growing a garden!
this year we purchased 12 hens so we can have fresh eggs and share with neighbors and use their byproducts as fertilizer. We also had to cut cedar trees down in the yard and had them milled. So far we have a beautiful ceiling in the entry room, several shelves in closets and a floor bed in a hauling trailer and a great smelling garage until we build a storage closet to and line the walls.
I am tired of buying yogurt in containers we can’t recycle, so we are starting to make our own using fresh milk from the farm down the road.
To teach my 8 year old daughter more “green” initiatives like using green cleaning solutions and using her paper recycling kit, and how to put ideas into action. And to allow her to teach me as one of her goals in life is to “save the polar bears” I hope she does :)
I am definitely trying to bring my lunch more and use reusable bags. This way, I’m not using Styrofoam cups and paper bags from eating out as a bonus to the non-brown bagging it (and it’s healthier)…
no more plastic!! Starting with YOUR bags :)
We’ve started using reusableq shopping bags.
My “green” resolution is to save some green. I am trying to be more mindful of what we buy so that we are less wasteful.
