hiphostess

{ visit The Hip Hostess here }

When I was younger I remember having a conversation with my aunt about how when I grew up I wanted to find a husband who would stay at home with our children while I worked in a high-paying job. Being the ultimate career woman was my dream and when my mom would get a Victoria’s Secret catalog in the mail I’d skip directly to the back section where they featured fashionable suits.  I’d daydream of being the powerful working woman the models exemplified (in my head I even had the large chest, perfect hair and long legs) and I’d bookmark my favorite workplace attire. However, as I grew that dream faded pretty fast and I realized that in my heart of hearts what I really, truly wanted was quite the opposite.

These days my dream is to be a sort of “Suzy Homemaker.” I want to stay home with my children (one day) and be a soccer mom.  And while cleaning is not my favorite I do enjoy cooking. In this fantasy my home sparkles and the smell of fresh baked goods fills the air. And in my new dream, my daily wear involves many a full skirts, low heels and of course pearls (oh yeah, and my hair is still perfect). Of course to finish off the look I don a stylish apron when cooking and cleaning so that I always remain stain free and impeccable. I realize that scrubbing my bathtub in heels is probably something I’ll never do but the apron part, that can be a reality.

See, several months ago I found The Hip Hostess and became enamored with their June Cleaver meets modern woman aprons. Owner, Deborah Bertrand enlisted the help of her creative mother when as a newlywed she wanted to look hip while homemaking.  After they whipped up a fashionable frock, friends began wondering how they could get one too and the rest, as they say, is history. Now you can channel your inner domestic diva by tying on an adorable apron of your own. Because all of The Hip Hostess’s aprons are made with attention to detail they can be worn day after day, and are destined to be heirlooms. Matching tea towels and magnets will keep your kitchen looking (almost) as cute as you.  So now I’m thinking if you can be chic while cleaning then maybe I can be a working wonderwife too! A girl can dream…

The Hip Hostess is giving one lucky winner their choice of demi-style apron and matching magnet set. For a chance to win, please answer the following question by February 5, 2010.
When it comes to cooking, are you a maker, a baker, or a faker?  Tell us about it.
Please begin checking the winner’s box on February 10, 2010 to see if you’ve won. Good luck!

I’m a maker–sometimes I think creating something just by combining seemingly simple ingredients in just the right way can only be described as magic. Of course, the most important ingredient is love.

these are adooorable! i love to bake. mmm.

    Lindsay S. says:

Definitely a maker! I started my own cookie delivery company in law school to make a little extra money on the side. I LOVE THESE APRONS!

    TiffyB says:

I’m a faker. I love the presentation of food, and sure, I can cook…but I don’t experiment much on my own. I am one good recipe follower though!

    Alyson says:

I am a maker, baker AND a faker! I love to cook and bake from scratch, but I also find a little bit of joy from whipping together pre-made food with other items I keep around my home (or just ordering in).

    kristen k. says:

kind of a faker…i do well with any boxed brownie recipe and most simple recipes for entrees, side dishes, or desserts. but when it comes right down to it, i like “cooking” best with things like chips & guacamole, frozen crispy tater tots, and shredded cheese (not necessarily all together at the same time, but those are pretty darn basic ingredients)!

  7. 207

Maker – I’m a much better chef than baker, but it doesn’t stop me from trying to bake all the time. It’s pretty hit or miss but my loving husband always eats it anyway!

  8. 208

I’m definitely a Baker! I love to make sweets and my blog is totally dedicated to that! :)

    Dianne says:

A little bit of all three, but mostly a maker. I love to bake, but then we tend to eat it and I don’t need the extra calories. I love to experiment with dinner recipes – especially in the crockpot. As for faking it, I have a number of recipes that are wonderful and look like I worked hard, but was really just a number of store bought products that I threw together. I try to keep the ingredients on hand so I can throw them together on busy days. The family raves and I don’t tell them how easy it was.

    Alanna says:

I am most definitely a baker – I’ve loved to bake since an early age and enjoy experimenting in the kitchen with different recipes. Whenever I’ve had a hard day, some time spent in front of the oven always helps to relax me.

I’m a maker! I love to cook and make new dishes up.

  15. 215
    Heather says:

While we all probably are a combo of the 3 I think I am mostly a maker. I like to eat what I bake, but I find actual meals more enjoyable to make. Which is good since we have to eat actual meals every single day and have baked goods sometimes..those pesky calories you know!

  16. 216
    Smiling Maia says:

I am a maker with a distinct inclination to experiment, invent and design new dishes, either cooked or baked, I believe for the enlightement of the ones I care for :-) Love cooking!

  17. 217
    Karla says:

I’m a maker and a baker…I love making complete dinners for my family and also have fun baking treats for special occasions. I actually already have a couple of aprons as I’m quite the mess maker in the kitchen but would love to have another.

  18. 218
    Chris says:

I love this modern/vintage feel…so…to be honest, I was a faker when I met my now husband two years ago! Obsessed with my career for a decade, I was ready to trade it in for being a stay-at-home mom (one son, one daughter on the way!) . So I’ve worked on becoming a maker….finding easy recipes I can try out and get good at while getting a little more adventurous. I am not someone who wants to spend hours in the kitchen…but someone who can create good healthy food and memories for my family…

    Jessica S. says:

Total Baker and Faker. I learned from my mom. She used to go to Costco and buy one of those chickens and put it in the oven to pretend that she prepared it and slaved away, but instead spend the rest of the time on cookies or a cake or something, and that is what we always remembered, the dessert. I follow in her footsteps. Last night made home-made biscotti on a whim and then for dinner made one of those stouffers meal in a bags. Both were delicious ;-)

  20. 220
    Mariana R. says:

When it comes to cooking, I am definitely a baker. I can spend hours and hours decorating cookies, but get fed up with a chicken in ten minutes!

  21. 221
    Danielle says:

I am definitely a maker when it comes to meals and a faker when it comes to desserts. And I am very thankful that my husband does the dishes.

  22. 222
    Virginia says:

I love all of it, but baking is my one true love. My husband is diabetic so I can’t do it all that often–or I would be the only one eating it. And believe me, I would. But something about baking is so comforting and leaves me feeling happy!

  23. 223

I’m a maker– I don’t usually follow recipes because there is just this special aura of magical mystery when you don’t know how exactly it will turn out. You just mix together what sounds right, what you love, and then enjoy the results. Then, you also learn to create and design your own food!

    Brandi says:

Baker baby.. “How to be a Domestic Goddess” by Nigella Lawson is my baking bible.. :)

  25. 225
    pam says:

so funnyl my sister just called and said “i’m paying a caterer to make the smoked gouda macaroni and cheese for my party… and not telling anyone”. seriously, it’s mac and cheese and she’s paying someone. she’s a faker. if i lived closer to her, i would make it for the party because i’m the maker. and baker.

  26. 226

we stopped eating out this year & are totally makers; we’re improving our skills each week

  27. 227
    Amber says:

I’m definitely a baker! I love trying new recipes and testing them out on my (very appreciative) husband and giving away baked goods to friends and neighbors. A cute apron would bring me so much joy!

  28. 228
    Nina says:

A baker! And I tell ya, I’d look FAB in one of those beautiful aprons! I’ve been trying so many recipes I’m beginning to make up my own now. I’m making all types of bread and cakes. It’s so tasty and so much fun, the kithchen smells sweetly, and my friends and family really appreciate it! :)

    jennifer says:

i’ll let you in on a little secret…
my fiance and i are fakers every sunday when we make scones from a box. they taste so good, and the mix is really simple – added to that they’re so easy to make…so we fake it.

the rest of the week though we’re makers…dinners are always delicious and healthy at our house…and we continue to dedicate time to cooking and eating well even with a 2 month old babe.

so, i think we deserve that little bit of faking it time..just once a week…doesn’t everyone?

    Jenny says:

I’m a big baker. I find true joy in baking.

I am a teacher and truly enjoy de-stressing and finding a different outlet in baking. Why not look good while doing that as well?

  31. 231
    Christy says:

A little of each – love to bake but don’t dare b/c then I’d eat it. :) I can make a decent meal but I’m not really a foodie. Lately work’s been busy so faking it with takeout most nights! But I could look cute serving it while wearing an apron like these. :)

    Angie says:

When it comes to cooking, are you a maker, a baker, or a faker? I would have to say that I’m both a baker and a maker. I work full time but also cook dinner every night but one. And this is in between my son Tai-Kwon-Do and Voice Lessons. Not a super woman by any means. I just got tired of restaurant and fast food. Not to mention how much you can save for other great things by not spending so much eating out. Thanks for an insightful blog. Angie

When I was little I used to love baking, it made feel me soo important XD

  35. 235

I’m a maker, for sure. I love to create new recipes on my own and try new things. 99% of the time I cook from scratch. I would put that apron to damn good use!

  36. 236
    sam says:

i would have to say faker, baker then maker — enjoy to bake when there is time but sometimes life (with kids) gets in the way and then the faker in me comes out : ) this set would be awesome and maybe inspire me to become more of a maker and baker

  37. 237
    michellek says:

I am a baker . . . of sweets! And it’s a darn good thing because although my husband is a professional baker, he only bakes bread and rolls and sometimes sticky buns. No cookies, cakes, pies, brownies, souffles. Someone has to do the hard work (and look pretty doing it!)!

  38. 238
    Jenny L says:

i am definitely a baker – i love to bake, even though i don’t normally eat much of what i make :). i like to give it away and make other people happy. i made peanut butter brownies at Christmas and even got my boss who doesn’t eat any sweets to eat 4 in one sitting. She said the other day i needed to make them again – always a nice feeling when people like what you make.

    helen says:

Even when I fake it I still put work into the presentation. I once had to work late making my dinner party menu undoable. I thankfully had preset a gorgeous table. The pizza was delivered just as my guests arrived. We ate pizza on china with a good bottle of wine and had a great time.

    Lisa says:

I am a maker..nothing beats home-cooked meals from scratch. But when I’m pressed for time, I’m a faker!

    Debbie in Memphis says:

I love baking, but just don’t do it as much as I would like to.

    Judy Grubbs says:

I am a baker. The rest of my cooking skills are weak, but I can make a great pie crust.

  43. 243
    trixx says:

I’m a faker. I can’t cook very well & I’m always busy but I can whip up things from cans and boxes like a pro!

  44. 244
    Amanda says:

I am totally a maker & a baker! There’s something about cooking that relieves stress in me. Getting out my Kitchen Aid mixer, getting my hands in the flour, waiting for my creation to be completed as the house fills with its sweet yummy smell… How could you not love it? Plus, my husband loves to cook, making dinnertime much more fun! I’ve got to say…the kitchen is probably my favorite room in the house, & anything I find that I love & can add to it will only make it that much better!

  45. 245
    Vanessa says:

I’m a baker for sure! I got the 90th anniversary edition KitchenAid mixer for my 20th birthday and I haven’t looked back. I grew up making cakes, cookies, and biscuits with my grandmother after school and now I love to spend my free time making cupcakes and bread to share with all of my friends. The best part is walking in the front door after class and smelling the lingering aroma of the previous afternoon’s labors. The worst part is cleaning up!

  46. 246
    Emily says:

I guess I’m a maker…or perhaps a faker. Though I cook and bake plenty, I am nearly incapable of following a recipe or actually using more measuring cups as anything beyond a scoop. Does that qualify me as a maker or faker. Either way – your shop is full of gorgeousness.

  47. 247
    Christine M. says:

Oh I’m definitely a baker! I’m only 20, but my friends all call me Martha…as in Martha Stewart! Of course, I would hope to appear just a bit younger and hipper…
