500 PENCILS BY FELISSIMO FOR SOCIAL DESIGNER
{please visit 500 pencils here}
I don’t know if we could have found a more perfect specimen to represent the theme ‘We Love Hue’ than the 500 Colored Pencils by Felissimo for Social Designer. When I first saw them fluttering around the internet I became instantly smitten. They are in my humble opinion the perfect collection-slash-‘installation art piece’ because they are as functional as they are eye catching and can assist in many, many more future creations. How can you go wrong? What makes these colored pencils more special than their garden variety siblings? Well first let’s discuss the magnitude-FIVE HUNDRED PENCILS people! That’s a whole lot of hue going on. You don’t get them all at once either which makes the acquiring of your collection a little more special. Each month for 20 months the recipient will receive a package from Japan that will have 25 glorious colored writing utensils inside. 500 pencils is limited edition and made to order. Beats that dried fruit-of–the month club subscription your aunt Edna gave you, no?
Who are these masked marvels of design? Glad you asked! Let me give them a soap box to stand on-“Social designer curates and creates smart products that tune into the greater good. You can join the cause by submitting designs for our competitions, weighing in with your opinion, purchasing goods or just simply talking about them. After all, every good idea (and every good cause) starts with a conversation – the more, the merrier.” Hear, hear!
One lucky, lucky winner will receive one subscription for 500 pencils starting March 2010. Oh gosh, I am so envious, please promise if you win you will at least “pen” me a colorful thank you note, k? Felissimo would like you to answer the following question to enter to win by Wednesday, February 10, 2010:
What would you do with 500 colors?
Good luck! Please start checking the winners box by Wednesday, February 17, 2010.

As a teacher I would use them to color EVERYTHING! I would try to inspire my students to draw and express themselves with color in their every day lives. I would also put aside my favorite colors to just LOOK at them!!! And make homemade cards to send snail mail to everyone I know. :)
Finally take a life drawing class. Even as my early drawings frustrated me, knowing I had 499 other colors to use still would keep me going!
What couldn’t you do with 500 colors?!?
I would color on walls of our apartment, I would doodle on every page in every sketchbook/journal I own! I would write at least a thousand postcards to people all across the world!
With 500 colors I’d learn to make a thousand more and turn my world into an altogeher much more fun place to be!
500 pencils would provide me with an inspiration a day. Each day, a new pencil, a new color for more than a year. I could cheat, I suppose, and use the same pencil a day or two in a row if I was really smitten with its sheen, but more than that would be difficult as I wanted and wished and longed for the next new taste…
All 500 colors would be happily on display in my house.. a handful would be used for the card creation of the day.. my nephews would also love to have the assortment to choose from for their crafts..
I would write multicolored love letters to my kids and my husband, matching the color to a mood or event or theme for that day. I would have contests with the kids to see who could come up with the best made-up names for obscure colors. I would memorize all of the names for “blue” that I could find, and try to work them into conversation. I’d have a blast! And I’d write you a note, thanking you for a great contest, in a bunch of lovely colors!
Since I am a poor student with no means to afford beautiful art, my use of the prize would be twofold: to hang on my sad, bare walls as an instillation piece and also to color the pages of my favorite Charley Harper coloring book. Both would provide my abode with a lovely splash of color and inspiration, which is much needed during long hours of studying. 500 shades of fun would definitely bring sunshine into my life (sadly, I am already dreaming of the blissful hours I might spend arranging my pencils into the perfect ROY G BIV spectrum), so please, if you’ve ever been a cash-strapped slightly type-A student who wants to be surrounded by beauty then select me as the winner. Thanks for your time!
I’d save my best friend with them. She could really use some color and inspiration in her life!
500 colors
500 colors taunt my lustful eyes
Flashing enticement so pretty I cry
Julep, Walnut, Flaxen, Red River
Felissimo, you are such a giver!
These 500 colors are meant to be used
Not just hung on a wall to be stared at, accused
My itching fingers pluck each wooden dart
And weave pieces of – no, no, not “art”
But stories of people and places and life
Turmoil, enchantment, wonder, and strife
Because each color, like each person I see
Is different and unique and treasured as they be
And each person’s story should be shared with the world
I plan to travel and unravel these tales untold
With 500 colors to showcase them all
Each being and narrative standing tall
This spectrum of nuance will give stories shape
And carry them into the world’s changing landscape.
Love the colours! I posted about this in my blog…

I would give them to my husband, who was an architect (and has a small collection of colored pencils…not nearly 500) and now is a dental student. Since his career change, I sense he misses his creative outlet. 500 pencils would do the trick :)
hannah tuesday and clementine (my 6 and 4 year old daughters) and i would sit on the floor and color and color and color. oh how an artist can dream…
I would USE each and every one – coloring each one down to just a nub of itself…….filling page after page with memories and musings, dreams and goals – leaving colorful pieces of myself……
Hello my name is Seth and Im 9 years old. This morning my mom told me that my dream had come true…there is 500 different colors. I love coloring, I draw dragons, and dinosours, flowers and fairies for my little sisters, monsters that eat homework and my favorite animals. I’ve made stories and even sold some cards when I was younger. There are different colors for people not everyone is pink or skin color. One christmas I asked Santa for an entire set of coloring materials and he brought me paints and pastels but I really like using color pencils. Oh my I would draw 500 different things and make a collection. I live in Uruguay, South America but they can come here from Japan too right? thanks to the people that invented this colors If I dont win them I will start saving money so when I grow up I can get them all.
I’ll paint the world! And make life more colorful!
I know it’s late for the contest .. but not too late to dream!
design my very own colourful fashion magazine!
Darker to lighter my soul I will turn,
bright smiles are the rate of return,
using my 500 pencils to scribble,
the face of Art no more is a dribble,
I could keep painting the sunset,
But i just want my new colors nobody forget!
