There are mountain people, ocean people, forest people, city people. What environment makes you feel most alive and why?
###############

I always thought I was an ocean/mountain person (ocean as in beachcombing etc not laying out on the sand), until I moved to the Sonoran Desert in Arizona, Thanks to the beauty of this "living desert", I've become a bonafide "desert rat".

I glory in it... especially when I'm able to stand out in the middle of it, right before the sun comes up when it's cold enough for a jacket and hopefully holding a perfect cup of coffee. All at once the birds set up a mighty chorus and the highest peak of the nearby mountains is barely lite up. Slowly and majestically the sun rises and the mountains slowly emerge from the night, having been just a shadow on the horizon to magnificent folds of colbot blue then sort of a purply rose/taupe brown with the rising sun light causing interesting shadows to appear from the folds of mountains that form the canyons and steeps.

In the foreground beams of morning sunlight pierce the trees and other vegetation, turning the dusty brown magically into shafts of gold dust.

If one is quiet enough one may actually see the hunters of the night returning with their winnings to their dens, meanwhile coveys of quails are pitter pattering in and around the bushes while mourning doves dart from tree to ground picking at the verious seeds that were blown down by the early morning breeze.

And that is what turned me from an ocean lover to a desert dweller who can also be at the Pacific in a short day trip and be on the mountain peaks in less than an hour.

The Sonoran Desert is the only place one can experience an Alpine environment and travel through all the other environments until one reaches the ocean environment.

I like all 4 but I'd have to say I appreciate the ocean the most now, having grown up pretty far from the ocean (in TN). I now live an hour away and love it!

I think I am a forest person (though I am always, ALWAYS up for a trip to the mountains or the beach!) ... I grew up in northwestern Oklahoma, but our house was in the country surrounded by trees - my husband and I recently bought a house that is on some land - surrounded by trees! We have our forest hideaway now & love it!

I grew up near the ocean, but was always most at home in the mountains. I think the vastness of the sea scares me a little, where being surrounded by trees and swathes of green is so much more comforting.

I am definitely an ocean person. I grew up spending the majority of my vacation time at the beach with family, so being at the ocean brings back the best memories. I feel so energized whenever I am at the coast and always begin to feel like a child again when I'm at the beach. I get so overwhelmed by the power and the beauty of the ocean and all that inside it (its a whole other world in there!!), and that, my friends, is why I am an ocean person.

I love being around all of the people and commotion in the city...but getting away to our cabin in the northwoods of Wisconsin cannot be beat. I'll take a little of both!

Awwww, definitely the "Vera"! I grew up in a military family - we lived everywhere! Wherever I am, with a good book/camera/watercolor set, "that's" where I feel good - ocean, mountains, inner city, country road, plains of west Texas, prairies of Kansas, art gallery, museum, used book/art supply stores, cattle auction, flea markets, a military base, school, church - each of these are a piece of who I am and how I feel.

I'm an ocean person. Nothings more invigorating than the salty air, the bright sunlight, the sometimes still chilly water on a hot day.

Luckily, I hail from Seattle which has an abundance of mountains, forests, and an ocean that surround a bustling city, so I don't have to fore sake one environment for another. For me Seattle will always be home because living here means I never have to choose between camping, swimming, going to plays, hiking, scuba diving, or having a night out on the town.
