Sucré
Today is a day of celebration and revelry for Louisiana and much of the south, for it is Mardi Gras. Between the celebration of our victory and the general liveliness of this time of year, the entire state has been in party mode! Music, parades, parties, beads, festive cocktails, dancing and of course yummy food abound in the Big Easy and all throughout the state. Perhaps one of the most notable icons of Fat Tuesday is the King Cake.
Beginning on January 6th these cakes are sold in bakeries statewide. These simple twisted bread-like cakes are laced with cinnamon and sugars. Iced in colors of purple, green and gold these hues represent justice, faith and power. Inside each one is a tiny plastic baby doll, which represents the infant Jesus. New Orleans tradition dictates that whomever bites into the slice of cake with this trinket must buy the next cake. An easy way to keep the party going right?
In New Orleans there are plenty of sources to find King Cakes but my favorite would have to be Sucré. Nestled in the trendy, eclectic Garden District on Magazine Street, Sucre is a sweet boutique that is one of a kind. Executive Pastry Chef Tariq Hanna has been featured on the Food Network and owner Joel Dondis has been a important part of the New Orleans culinary scene for over a decade. Artisan sweets like gourmet chocolates, French macaroons, gelatos and fabulous cakes will delight any sweet tooth. Their version of the King Cake is a ring of twisted, buttery dough sweetened with cinnamon and sugar and filled with a whipped cream cheese filling. Beyond being tasty they are a feast for the eyes.
Best news of all? Sucré ships the majority of their yummy confections including King Cakes so you can satisfy your craving no matter your locale. If you want to read more about Sucré and my latest visit there check out my blog. King Cakes will be available for purchase until the end of the month so as we say “laissez les bon temps rouler!” That means “let the good times roll!”

green! i love being completely surrounded by green. i always imagine myself lying in a field of grass on a warm sunny day, nothing around for miles, the nature stretching so far that the next closest thing you can see is the sky…
Oh my, just can’t choose. Purple is considered the “spiritual color.” Gold is the “royal color.” Green’s my eye color. How to choose among such a group–not possible.
Purple because it’s so vibrant and passionate!
i think green. its not easy being green. vegetables are green and kids cry about eating them. it must hurt green’s feelings. not to mention the fact that when you ‘re sick people say you are green. green is envious of all the more beloved colors like purple and gold. I think i’ll give green a little love. Thank god it has a better publicist these days. Being Green for the environment is really turning that color around. it must be great for its self esteem too.
I love green. I think it’s just such a comforting color.
Purple! It’s royal and decadent at the same time. Perfect for indulging!
All of them – swirled together. :-)))
Green for sure!
Purple, definitely!
Purple….. drums up the lively spirit of Mardi Gras!

Green! I love green! It can be fun and relaxing and energizing and fresh and clean and brilliant. That cake sounds yummy.
Only purple of course! (of course because it’s my favorite not because it’s necessarily the best)
Green has always been my favorite color. And now it’s my daughter’s too!!!
purple – the colour of royalty.
Purple it is the color of the robe of our savior in most of the pictures and has spritual comfort to it .
Green, absolutely! Especially now, when it is winter and I am wishing for spring. But I love green all year, sometimes with some blue mixed in.
It’s hard to decide, but I’d have to say gold. It’s just so shiny and reminds me of the sun, which I’m sorely missing right about now.
Green.
purple, for sure!
I’ll go with purple, but really and truly it’s purple and green together. :) I make miniature quilts in those colors often.
green – we all need more faith.
Purple, I just love the feeling I gt when I see it and there just isn’t enough purple in my life now that I am all grown up.
Purple! I could sit in the midst of a purple room all day. Maybe I should have been born a purple grape.
Love green!
i love purple these days. such a happy festive color!
