The best ideas come out of necessity, ie. electricity, the telephone, the ubiquitous SaltBox NYC tote. Nicole Scheinholz founded Saltbox NYC over a decade ago, the company initially made designer shower curtains. After years of toting her daily haul across New York City, Scheinholz whipped up a custom bag crafted from one of her signature shower curtains. This one-of-a-kind bag became an instant hit and the rest is history (or in Scheinholz case herstory).
Now Saltbox NYC is hailed as a top source for fashionable, functional bags and accessories. Crafted of heavy gauge canvas, treated to be water resistant each piece is perfect for year-round use. The all-woman team at Saltbox NYC is focused and everyone weighs in on new products and patterns that are in development. Each unique pattern is inspired by travel, history, nature and architecture. While graphic and vibrant the prints and palettes are completely wearable and each tells its own story. Best of all the sturdy canvas softens with use just like your favorite pair of blue jeans. Nothing is better than a trusty, broken-in tote that looks better with age. These style packed bags are a sight for sore eyes. Imagine yours waiting in an airport eagerly anticipating adventure or longing for you to bring back to your obviously stylish home.
TWO lucky winners will get a chance to tote in style. One winner will take home a Saltbox NYC set including a travel bag, luggage tag and travel wallet in the Kiwi Geo print. Another winner will take home the same in the Pool Geo print. Each prize package is valued at $258 USD! For your chance to enter to win please answer the following question by Wednesday, February 24, 2010:

I’ve traveled with many, many types of bags but it turns out I’m the biggest fan of a traditional BACKPACK. They are easy to carry, not hard on the shoulders or the back and distribute the weight properly.
My favorite bag is always my stow-under-seat carry-on. The one I have is getting a bit beaten up, but every time I fly it always carries my phone, tickets, wallet, computer, books, magazines (if I can sense I don’t feel like reading the books), papers to grade, and – I’ve learned this the hard way – a toothbrush, just in case!
a backpack, not pretty i know, but still very practical…
I’m a big fan of a really large tote bag- it can serve as my purse, but also fit goodies to keep me entertained while traveling.
I prefer to forgo a purse plus a carry-on so need one functional bag for it all. A soft sided tote that will fit under the seat is my choice. Overhead bins always seem to be a premium on today’s flights and I need direct access to all of my flying necessities – cash, magazines, healthy snacks and lip gloss!
When flying I always take along my backpack because it’s easy to carry. I’m a last minute packer and my backpack always ends up full of shoes! :)
Currently, my favorite piece of luggage is a tall sturdy canvas bag with folding wheels and a brown and green apple print. The “sturdy canvas” is especially important since I’ve used this bag ever since my original weekender bag was destroyed while being moved from the plane. This bag is also multifunctional depending on how I fold it. If completely unfolded with the wheels popped out, I can use it as an upright rolling bag with top handles. I can also fold the bag in half, tuck in the wheels, hold the side handles, and use it as a carry-on. Another option is to keep the wheels flat and fold up the entire bag so that it fits inside my larger suitcase. This way, I have an extra bag available for carting home vacation finds. The contents change depending on how I choose to use it, but I’m guaranteed to have a book, lip balm, snack, and photos of my family (never leave home without them!) somewhere in the mix.
My favorite bag is my carry-on. I keep my dslr, passport, and wallet in there. I try to keep it as light as possible, but darn that airport candy and magazines :)
My favorite bag for traveling is the biggest bag I can find. My husband hates when we go on vacations because I carry about everything I own. Plus since we have a 5 year old daughter I carry tons of stuff for her too. It is funny when we go anywhere my husband has 2 small duffle bags at the most. Then the rest of the trunk and half of the back seat is my stuff. He says we look like a family of 10 not 3. I have a reason for packing so many things though. I went on what was supposed to be a day trip 1 time, but we ended up having to stay 2 days. I had no change of clothes, no toothbrush, nothing. I promised myself I would always have everything I needed at all times.
My laptop bag is always a staple. There is enough room to cram a few emergency items in case my luggage gets lost and that saved me once before!
I have 2 bags that I alternate with my travels. The 1st is a Louis Vuitton duffle that my parents gifted me for my High School graduation. It was such a generous and loving gift! And whenever I travel with it I feel like my family is with me. The 2nd is a gorgeous wool woven large bag that I bought in an indigenous market in Guatemala. Even though it cost me next to nothing, it’s still priceless to me, as this was my 1st international solo trip. Traveling so deeply enriches my soul and fills my life with passion. I would feel really blessed to now have a 3rd bag to travel with. If I won, it would remind me of creating my own luck in life! Plus, I would look super chic. ;-)
I backpacked 9 countries in Central and South America for several months after I graduated college recently, so I became quite attached to having a small, lightweight bag that I could throw over my shoulder and leave at a moment’s notice. Unfortunately, mine got stolen – perils of cheap travel!
I am hoping to backpack Eastern Europe as soon as I finish my Master’s degree program, so I’ll certainly be needing a new bag…
: )
my fave bag is a flat messenger bag to keep documents, trashy mags, directions, maps, etc. and it fits anywhere!
My favorite bag is my daughter’s diaper bag, because not only does it hold a heck of a lot of stuff (think diapers, wipes, bottles, toys, momm’y wallet, magazines, and more), but it has secret compartments where I can tuck away my cell phone, lip balm, ticket, and other smaller items that my little one would love to get her hands on. I don’t leave home without it!
I carry an oversized hobo bag that serves as my purse in addition to my carry-on. It is stylish and functional, and fits all of my magazines, books, snacks, etc. for the trip.
My favorite bag for traveling is my carry on, though I don’t have a good one, it’s what’s inside that makes it favorite. It contains the answer to every question I will get between home and destination… passport? right here. blankie for baby? here you go. Mommy, I’m hungry! Granola bar, check! What time is our connection? Itinerary right here. Everybody’s finally sleeping, pull out the iPod and my novel.
I always bring a small vintage suitcase that I found in a tiny consignment shop. Its perfect- it has outside pockets for my travel papers, and the inside (which is pristine silk) has tons of different pockets and nooks to hold everything. Best of all, it fits under most airplane seats, so I don’t have to stow it above!
I normally end up taking my backpack as a my go-to bag when travelling. I use it to carry my laptop and any other electronic devises, a good book/magazine, any sort of make-up or medications I keep on me and snacks.
After many years of using cute travel tote bags for my computer and work necessities, I’ve gone back to using a back pack for travel these days as most of our vacations recently have been adventure trips so it is needed during the actual trip. It’s nice to have it balanced on both shoulders, but I do miss the “cute/style” factor that I once had and would love to get it back as I’ve given all but one of my totes away :)
My favorite bags to travel with are messenger bags, toiletry bags and one giant suitcase for all my fabulous foreign finds.
I usually use my beloved Harrod’s tote as my carryon, it had this fantastic print made of repeating pictures of the facade, but the strap just gave up the ghost last week after 5 years of near-daily service. My favorite bag to travel with is probably this flat, tall bag with a flap closure that I got from a Gap outlet aaaages ago. It’s made of this soft light denim, with the most subtle gold thread running through, so it’s really pretty, and I get complemented on it constantly. It’s my favorite bag to travel with when I’m AT my destination, because it’s pretty flat to my body, especially if I sling the long strap crossways. I am VERY particular about closures for bags and would never purchase a tote that was open at the top, and the flap closure is great for scooting around the city. I usually keep the flap side against my body, and since it’s so far up on my body when I’m wearing it cross-ways, I would be very aware of fingers sneaking into my bag. The flatness of the bag makes it perfect for packing, and if it starts to rain, I can wear it under my coat without everything looking all awkward. The size is pretty perfect, it can fit a folder vertically, and if I need to I can jam a fair amount of stuff into the bag, because the structuring allows it to bulge out pretty well. It’s not my favorite carry-on bag, but it’s perfect for when I arrive at my destination and want to be as light and sleek (and secure) while walking around the city as possible.
I travel a lot to visit my fiancee, who is currently working 3000 miles away on a job assignment. For that reason, I have my go-to plane bag that sits in my under the seat carry on. This bag is filled with all my flying essentials: neck pillow, eye mask, medication, gum, travel socks, extra batteries, headphone converters, face wash cloths, tissues and chap stick. Now when I book a last minute trip, I can just grab my little bag and go!
I love my carry on suitcase. I generally pack very light and I bought this adorable black and white tweed carry on. It has great roomy front pockets to store the things I need to access easily (hat, scarf, map, magazines, etc.) The rest of my clothes and other necessary items are stashed inside. I love it because with this bag the only other bag I carry is my purse. All that being said I would still love a Saltbox set. These are amazing.
My most favorite bag for travel is a grey canvas messenger bag – sling it over my shoulder and away we go to fun and adventure. Love it. Of course, a little water resistance … and a splash of color would be fabulous!
My carry-on suitcase is my travel essential: And it’s essential because it’s got wheels. And a handle. I always kid myself into thinking I don’t need to check a bag, but come time to leave for the airport, I’m sitting on my poor little luggage with all my strength, trying to zip it closed!
It’s a smaller stylish travel bag, in fact, that I lack–and that would come in awfully handy as my additional “personal item.” The seams of my purse would be ever so relieved!
My favorite bag is my LeSportsac Carry on! I love it! and I usually carry my yarn in it!
My favorite bag to take on travels is my Tumi carry-on. I use it to hold just about everything! Since I am paranoid about luggage getting lost I try to pack everything into that one bag and the rest goes into my husband’s big suitcase that gets checked.
I usually carry 1 purse, 1 canvas bag for my knitting, and 1 large black “beach bag” style bag in which the other two, and sundry other travel necessities (blanket, books, peanut M ‘n’ M’s), can be shoved. I promise, it all fits under the seat in front of me!
My carry-on rolling bag. It’s simple, but I always pack my most important items in it. I’d hate to get to my destination and not have clean underwear and my toothbrush…
I’m a fan of tote bags. They can hold my wallet, my computer, a few magazines, a book, some snacks, some make-up, and a change of clothes if need be. A tote bag is my go to bag and I have about a million of them!
I always bring this brown leather overnight bag. It fits one days worth of clothers perfectly with al my necessities. On longer trips I stuff it with all my magazines and activitities… sort of reminds me of the “fun bag” I got to bring when I was a kid on trips
My most favorite bag to bring travelling is my camera bag! I love taking pictures, and I can’t imagine travelling without it.
I’m always on the lookout for the perfect travel tote/carry-all. The one I currently use (not quite perfect, unfortunately) works for travel as well as for toting around town. It’s large enough to carry my 17″-inch MacBook Pro, datebook, notebook and pen, book, wallet, small makeup bag, cell phone, and water bottle. If I’m traveling by plane, it also holds wrap to throw over my shoulders.
Iif I’m headed on vacation, I take along an inexpensive, and very handy, bag that I bought at a museum gift shop years ago. It folds neatly into my regular suitcase or carry-all. Open, it has loads of room for anything I pick up along the way. It’s made of strong fabric that has withstood years of airline-baggage abuse.
Thanks to the introduction to SaltBox NYC. Their bags — and patterns! — are wonderful.
My favorite bag to take along is my carryon. I pack it up with care adding in travel guides, books, magazines, my ipod and paper and pen. I then spend my time on the plane looking through all of the literature about the great place i’m going and making sure to jot down all of the places I know I just HAVE to see while i’m there! I turn on my ipod (loaded with mood music of course) and by the time the plane lands I am itching in my seat to rocket down the aisle, collect my luggage and set out on an adventure!
I consider myself quite the “queen of packing”, having at one point in my life the dubious honor of having my no-one-can-help-me father request me to re-pack his personal bags for a 3 month trip abroad. :)
Having typed that… I usually only back in one bag: an old, off-the-clearance table, canvas backpack that I picked up at GAP back in “the day.” However, what once came across as stylish for a college kid, doesn’t print that way on a 30 something would-be stylish mom of two.
These bags would be a perfect up-grade. And I’ll hand that old canvas backpack over to my rugged husband.
(D’you think I have enough hyphens in this comment.) :P
My favorite bag is a thrift store find: it looks like an over-sized bowling ball bag, baby blue on the outside, lined with baby blue and white satin, with a heavy metal zipper. Its just the right size to take on one night over night, or to put my important things in on a longer trip.
Oh and it has a smaller counterpart too.
All for $6.
LOve bags!!!
my favorite is this purple bag that i have, use it for everything!
Thanks!!
Megan
When my boyfriend took a job in another state, I bought myself a cheerful black and white polka dot carry-on suitcase to console me. I have traveled to visit him, and other places, so many times since then, but I still get excited to pull the suitcase from under the bed. I love carefully folding up my clothes to place in the suitcase. I love filling its front pockets with books and essentials. I love stomping through airports with my friendly suitcase rolling behind me, and I am so proud to retrieve it from security conveyor belts or sometimes the baggage claim. I even dress to match it when I travel!
The biggest “purse” I can find, in the brightest, boldest colors! I can’t stand to have multiple bags… so I try to cram everything into one bag, and then use my husbands bag for leftovers!
I can’t travel without my pink and black messenger bag with the laptop pocket. It has a pocket at the bottom too for storing a crocket or stitching project. And plenty of space in the main pocket for a book and my “regular” purse. Small pockets on the side for camera, cell phone and iPod. This keeps me sane in airports, car trips or train rides.
I like a big hikers backpack. I never check luggage so I have to travel light. I can usually cram everything I need into a backpack and still have room to bring back goodies for my family. (I’m going to New Zealand in 15 days!!)
My black Mountain Equipment Coop backpack is my mainly travel bag. It’s not that pretty anymore, not that it ever was, but it’s going on 20 years old and has seen many different countries, cities, bodies of water and human beings. It is the perfect size to carry just the right amount of stuff, not too big to make it too heavy. I always pack my Kindle, my portable Sirius radio, my iphone full of podcasts, passport, wallet, snacks and tote bags for souvenirs. I also always, ALWAYS, pack wet wipes for travel, you never know when you’re going to have sticky hands and no sink!
That said, I’d love a bag that’s pretty, grown up and classic, I’d get rid of the black beast in a hearbeat!
I recently acquired a vintage train case. I don’t know why I never had one of these before! Not only is it darling, but all of my cosmetics and hair styling accessories and products fit perfectly in it. Since it’s a hard case, nothing gets smashed, and it all stays neat and organized.
Naturally I have favorite travel bags, however it is my favorite Fantasy travel bag that keeps me up at night. I dream of the days of elegant travel, of Casa Blanca runways and women in trench coats watching as their oilcloth trunks are wheeled onto the tarmac. If I could travel anywhere I would time travel, I would wear my understated trench coat and a cloche hat and watch as my oilcloth trunk monogrammed with my initials and bound with leather straps is carried into a tiny airplane. I would wrap my trench coat tighter as the wind blew and glaze apologetically at a handsome companion. Alas, such is not the case. So I will content myself with canvas bags in fun prints…”Heres to looking at you kid.”
I’m simply a fan of the small-enough-to-carry-on bag w/wheels. My favorite is part of a set I have that is red with a safari theme. Much easier to keep an eye on than the basic black.
my favorite besides standard luggage is my backpack. It holds a lot, keeps it close to me and lets me have my arms/hands free to do other things.
I went to Europe for the first time last year, and I packed a huge suitcase so I could fit everything I needed for the ten days I was there. Um, big mistake. Do you know what it’s like to lug a big suitcase around cobblestone streets, through airports and – most painfully – in & out of train stations? I’ve found the easiest thing to carry when I travel is my monogrammed LL Bean tote that my best friends gave me on my wedding day. It’s sturdy and roomy (but fits under my seat) and can carry all of the magazines, chapstick and vitamins (yes, I travel with a ridiculous amount of vitamins that allow me to believe I’m boosting my immune system when flying) I need. Sigh. The Saltbox luggage would be PERFECT for me.
I have a carry-on bag that, while small, seems to hold a weekend’s worth of clothes and toiletries when I travel over the summer. In the winter, I’m stuck with this old, cheap duffel bag. I don’t travel too far these days, so the duffel bag seems to work for now.
I am, however, traveling to Louisville in about a month for my first big “trip” without my fiance next month. I’m going to present a paper I wrote in grad school a a big conference…and it looks like a Saltbox NYC bag would be the perfect thing to hold everything I’m going to need (except maybe my fiance, who will try to stow himself away in my luggage). :-)
my favorite bag is my leather two-strap, I travel alot and this has become my easiest bag to put on, I stow my laptop, camera and other stuff of mine and im good to go, it doest wear or tear and its lasted through alot so far.
-lets see how much more it can take-
I am a fan of the carryon bag that fits under the seat in front of you. In it, I always have a water bottle, an ipod, fancy ear phones that the cord retracts and bundles itself up, a big cashmere scarf, a small sample of lotion, and almonds. Always almonds. The one I have now is a shoulder bag, made of really sturdy sporty material. Not exactly a fashion item, but completely indestructable.
