WWC Book

{ visit where women create }

One of my favorite pastimes is sitting in the passenger seat of a moving car and cruising through a residential neighborhood at dusk. People generally have their window covering opened and the lack of sunlight makes it possible for me to make out the color of paint on the walls, the way the furniture is spaced out, the idiosyncratic nuances that make that house theirs and not mine. Am I the only person who does this? I didn’t think so. Jo Packam, the creator and Editor-in-Chief of Where Women Create understands my desires.

Where Women Create invites you into the creative spaces of the most extraordinary women of our time. Through stunning photography and inspirational stories, each issue of this quarterly magazine will nourish souls and motivate creative processes.”It’s an evolving inspiration board, right in your hands. My only concern is for my own creative workspace. I have a feeling the inspiration gleaned from Where Women Create is going to result in a whole lot of remodeling around these parts. After perusing Packam’s works you’ll be inspired to create something for yourself, I’m sure. If not I’ll eat my words. Or decoupage them. Or knit them into something wonderful. The options are endless, really.

………………

Miss Krista, our Weekend Editor, is a mother, a lover and a big believer in the power of a cupcake. she loves double entendres but is not a fan of the high-five. She blogs about the corners of her heart at my life as i see it.

    CraftyMummy says:

It would have heaps of natural light, lots of storage, big work spaces and a comfy chair to curl up in and dream

  2. 2
    Sophia R. says:

White walls, white chair, white ikea drawers and expedit shelves, colourful accessories: lamps, vases with flowers, posters and prints on the wall (with simple white frames), a DIY patterned cushion on the chair. Can you tell I’ve thought about this?

  3. 3

My dream space would indeed be very spacious with a huge wooden easel that would be able to hold even the largest of my paintings. Beautiful north facing windows for the best natural light possible and a corner set up for newborn photoshoots with the perfect light. Tons of room for books and painting and photography supplies. A space to meet with clients would be nice too. Shoot, maybe I need a whole house for all this!

  4. 4
    Isabel says:

BigBIG room with lot of light, cupboards with all the material prefectly tidy, one of the walls with a whiteboard o organise my ideas ..

  5. 5
    Anne B. says:

High ceiling, large windows overlooking garden, wide planked dark wood floor, light butterscotch painted walls (with plenty of fabric covered bulletin boards for posting numerous ideas), large worktable in center of room, antique desk in corner facing windows and room, large comfy chair and ottoman in corner for reading and dreaming, shelves and cubbies for storage of numerous interests, rustic crystal chandelier hanging from center of room, several thick hand-hooked throw rugs, several types of fabrics to keep room warm and interesting…..

    Ms. Amy says:

    It would have sliding glass doors which opened to a covered patio. It would have light wood floors, soft blue paint on the walls and white denim slipcovered furniture. There would be a table for my sewing machine, and one for my crafting – both set to MY comfort level (shorty). My iHome would live there, probably set on top of the wall of shelves and cabinets filled with gift wrapping materials, fabric, stamps, glitter, and paint. {sigh}

  7. 7
    Jennifer says:

A place for everything and everything in it’s place. I work so much better and more clearly when my space is tidy. Sure it will muss itself as I work, but clear space = clear head = more creativity =awesome day!

  8. 8
    Jenny says:

An old space, with lots of light, high ceilings, pretty views, white walls, exposed wood beams. Long tables, bolts of fabric, pegboards, shelves, idea boards. A healthy amount of clutter. Room for friends to visit. A small area where the kids can play, or I could sit and flip through a shelf full of inspirational books, or meet with customers. An organized spot for finished products. Good music, NPR or a book on tape.

I have all the most important elements in my studio already, but I still love to dream…

  9. 9
    Cathy K. says:

Light, bright and airy – white walls, pale green trim, lots of windows for natural light. Built in bookshelves open and closed in (for when you just want to hide things away); basket. A large standing height table to work at, a comfy chair to read in, my comptuer for when I need to find some insipiration, music or just want to be entertained.

  10. 10

Lots of windows looking out on an inspiring view.
Plenty of space for friends and family to come and sit and visit while I work.
    Ahhhh.

  11. 11
    Catherine says:

Huge windows overlooking water…whitewashed wood floors…crisp cream walls…weathered wood furniture…a big cozy chair and a half in a coral pink…an insane surround sound music system…long, billowy white curtains…espresso machine…a large worktable with storage…mercury glass accents…a craft area for my kids…some Yellena artwork…perfection!

  12. 12
    Lexi says:

Huge windows (with window seats) for natural lighting, a massive table for laying out pattern pieces & cutting, open spaces for moving smoothly between cutting table, iron & serger & a huge inspiration board for keeping me motivated. Off to the side bonus: mini fridge, toaster oven & cappuccino machine!

  13. 13
    Lisa Orgler says:

A large room with smaller work nooks. Lots of natural light bursting against soft, neutral colored walls. A large work table, my sewing machine, lots of fun storage areas, music, comfy chairs, warm carpet for my bare feet to fall into, and lots of creative hanging opportunities for inspirational doo-dads and completed pieces.

  14. 14
    Kristin C. says:

My dream work space would have floor to ceiling windows on 3 sides…. one with a view of the snow topped mountains of Colorado, one with a view of the ocean with a white sand beach, and one with the exact view and set up of my mom’s front porch where we sip and drink coffee. Hey… you said dream right… :)

  15. 15
    Rfo says:

A large room with a large bay window facing north (north light is the best for painting).  The bay window would have cushions and fresh flowers and i would sit and read or nap to take breaks from my art.  In front of the window Id have my easel and painting table and somewhere would be my light table with  a wood side table for my bristol board and pens.

The floors would be a dark wood and the walls a lighter golden cream.  Gold pillows and fabrics would be the soft accents everywhere and I would want at least part of one wall to be chalk board paint.

AND of course… fresh flowers everywhere.

  16. 16
    Chacoy says:

I would love to have a room that is not too big, with a big vintage desk in the middle. The room would be filled with natural light and have some awesome creations inside! Thank you for the opprotunity!

  17. 17
    Carlin R says:

My ideal craft room would have plenty of windows, a sewing table, a computer desk, built in storage on one wall, a cushy chair, and a dog bed. The walls would be white, with the built in storage painted in a nice green accent shade, and throw rungs on the hardwood floor.

  18. 18
    Grace says:

oh my, it would be bright and spacious…and I’m not sure yet because I am in the process of deciding which empty bedroom is going to become the creative space. Alo, I decorate and design by “feeling” – I feel my way through. I will see something my insides glow and then I say “yes” to that piece of that color etc. All I know right now is it is time to have one – I can feel it !

  19. 19
    Amber Conger says:

Since I work with metal, my dream space would be big & industrial; tall ceilings with a bridge crane overhead for helping lift big pieces, concrete floors, & lots of work tables & room for tools. There would be a big door for moving pieces outside to the sculpture garden area. A nice cozy office area would be a must; to hold inspirational books, the computer, & a place for drawing, thinking, & enjoying a cup of cappuccino with a warm kitty cat :) The entire space would be a mix of recycled industrial materials & metals, with some feminine touches thrown in; there would be at least one sparkling crystal chandeleir, but no pink anywhere….

  20. 20
    vivi says:

I dream about this room! In a high Loft with windows in the ceiling and one wall also, Aged hardwood floors. The other walls would be in a very soft silver white paint. The room filled with canvas, paints and other artsy items. In the corner an old India Daybed, loads of Old books. A complete selection of my favorite music. AAhhhmm.

  21. 21
    Hannah says:

My dream creative space is my own photography studio. I’m sure I could go on and on about it, as I have spent lots of time dreaming about it, but the highlights… Big huge windows, a balcony with a beautiful view, a nontraditional studio setup in one part, antique furniture, reclaimed wood floors, tons of bookshelves, my own work on canvases on the walls, very comfy seating, and of course gorgeous natural light (from previously mentioned huge windows).

  22. 22
    Carrie says:

My dream space would be large enough to have work spaces for fellow artists. I love to work alongside other creatives. With great music in the background, lots of chatter and laughter, and of course mutually constructive feedback on our projects. Wonderful just to picture it in my mind!

  23. 23
    Christy says:

I’m fortunate enough to have my own room/office that I’ve put together myself – painted robin’s egg blue, with the scrap desk my husband made, a table desk with cord mgmt undershelf also made by hubbie & a treadmill. But if money were no object, it would be bigger, with plenty of windows for natural light. I’d get a large armoire to hide my KNK & printer and have a separate antique sewing machine table for my sewing machine. I’d have a large double door closet with built in shelves for all my supplies/camera equipment/files. And a loveseat or chair+ottoman so hubbie would be comfortable hanging out with me. More natural wood, antiques and a touch lighter blue for the wall. Photo ledges on teh wall to display my camera collection. Great question.

  24. 24
    Roberta says:

It would be clean, white, neutral, yet shabby and soft and very feminie…but NO clutter or “gee gaws” everywhere…too distracting.

  25. 25
    abir says:

my dream place would look like I was in the 1960’s because that is my favorite era of time.

  26. 26
    Angela says:

I have a nice space right now, but it’s lacking light. Also, I’d like it to be separate and private from my living space and beautifully organized. I like to save a lot of stuff, just in case. It tends to get globbed together if I’m not careful.

  27. 27
    Teri H. says:

My dream work space would first have LOTS of storage. It would have beautiful wood floor to ceiling shelves on 1 wall to hold books, patterns, and 1 would have small ledges to hold rubber stamps so they could all be seen. I would have wood cubby holes to hold all of my fabrics. Then I would have a huge desk plus organization piece to do all my work at. I would have to have another room built off of it for my wood working supplies, kiln, amd metal working supplies. I would also have a corner with a deep comfy chair with lots of pillows for reading or designing . But most of all I would have it filled with every art and craft supply that I would ever need to make anything ever I wanted. That really does sound nice.

  28. 28
    Kelly Fly says:

It would be a little renovated shed that would be in the back yard of my house. With big windows for lots of light to come in. I would want it to be clean…. lots of whites but then with splashes of color with idea boards and inspiring paintings. I would also have everything stored in boxes so they are easy to access. And two separate work spaces one for my computer so a desk and the other for cutting fabric etc… more like a big work desk. Also an easel for my painting to sit on.

  29. 29
    Clara says:

I consider my own creative space – my studio — to be my dream space. No, it’s not large; and, no, it doesn’t have “ideal” storage, but adapting to its constraints has been a great learning experience. When my husband and I first moved into our current home, and I into the room designated as my studio, there was little alternative but to purge my supplies.

As a result, I prioritized. I disposed of goods I rarely or never used or that didn’t engage me. I gave them to a local shop that donates free art supplies to elementary schools, where they will be well used. I configured my space efficiently — using some ideas, by the way, from Where Women Create magazines — and again, was able to do more with less. I made sure to set aside one wall for inspiration, putting up art by others that I love, and reserving space for a small inspiration board, which changes often. The one constant, other than the wonderful natural light I’m fortunate to have in the room, is a comfy “lounging” rug for our two pups.

I’m continually forced to edit, and to think twice before I bring anything into the space, but I’ve found that discipline to be liberating rather than confining. What’s in my studio now is exactly what I want and need. It’s a philosophy that I’m slowly bringing into other rooms in my home and other parts of my life. I’ve come to realize that my “dream” space is one in which I feel at ease, and have my loved ones close by.

P.S. I’ve been watching Jenny Doh’s new journey with delight and excitement. Thanks for the wonderful giveaway.

    Jenn A.F. says:

I’d like a big shed type structure in my backyard that is hooked up with electricity and looks all retro and neato, or an old airstream trailer or something that I could turn into my studio and office. It would be relaxing with great light, lots of storage, girly, and a creative and inspiring space.

  31. 31
    Caitlin says:

Natural light, a huge cutting table with the self-healing pads permanently fitted on, a kickin’ sound system with satellite radio, hi-speed internet on my laptop and a lock on the door. The storage would be organized by medium and then by colour and, again, all the cupboard doors and drawers would be lockable. All tools would be easily accessible and they would always be exactly where they should be. I’d like those kick plate vacuum things, to suck up dust and threads and crumbs. I’d like a small bar fridge and a coffee maker. And a toaster oven. The walls would be covered in paintings done by my partner. And a comfy chair, maybe a chaise to really stretch out on, wide enough for 2 for occasional snuggling.

Oh, a girl can dream, can’t she? :)

  32. 32
    Jill says:

I’ve been thinking so much about my dream space lately. It would be a little shed-like space in my back yard with several windows with simple shades when needed. I would have a prism in the corner of the window next to some potted plants so rainbows could hang out around the walls. When the windows were open I would watch my dog chase after birds while being surrounded by walls of storage space, giant paper mache sculptures of people, animals and monsters. The ceiling would be covered in yarn and run down the walls. The space would be really open and have a small table, but for the most part- have a big smooth floor where I could sit really closely to my work and be able to stretch out after a perfect day of creating things I love. When the night turned dark I would light my candles and drink tea while listening to some flute tunes from Peru. Oh yeah, and all the paper mache figures would come to life and clean the place up a bit when I really needed it.

    Meredith says:

I’ve been dreaming of this space, too.

My dream work space would have high ceilings and be filled with natural light. It would have a fireplace with comfy chairs in front of it, for knitting and reading. The walls are a light, creamy color and there are pops of brighter hues throughout, in pillows and accessories.

The desk would be right in front of the largest window and would be L-shaped with nice deep work surfaces. I’d be surrounded with my favorite pretty office supplies, but everything is neat and clean. On the desk is my lovely 24 inch iMac.

And, right next to me is a comfy dog bed, in which, snoring loudly, is my Boston Terrier, Cooper.

  34. 34

The walls and trim would be painted off-white and I would add lots of French style furniture and bookshelves. A crystal chandelier and toile fabric curtains are a must! I would also love enough space to add a daybed for dreaming and sketching!

    Have a fabulous day!
    Julie

    Brooke says:

My dream creative space would be open and full of light.  It would be organized (far from what it is now!) but still have some vintage flair.  It would be comfortable and homey without being kitchy…

    Erin says:

The ingredients I think would make a great creative space:
    > A bright, spacious room with lots of natural light, with a view of nature.
    > Plenty of attractive-looking storage, both built-in and free-standing.
    > Large work surfaces, both at sitting level and standing level
    > Good floor lamps and task lights
    > Nice sound system for tunes
    > Comfortable chair
    > Large inspiration board

    andrea d says:

i am a photographer so my dream space would be a giant empty room with white walls and lots of natural light. but i would be able to completely block the natural light with heavy curtains so that i could use studio lights instead. i would have an endless amount of backgrounds and quirky props. of course i would have many studio lights with lots of different sizes of softboxes. i would have not one, but two imac computers to edit and process my images on as well as a giant Epson printer to print my own photographs. one wall would be completely dedicated to inspirational stuff: magazine cutouts, postcards, photographs, polaroids, sayings, etc. everything would be very clean and very streamlined. *sigh* if only i could have that space now… everything in one place at the moment would be really nice. but as it is i now take pictures at a studio that is not mine, edit the images in my house and print at someone else’s house.

    Cathy F says:

My ultimate creative space would be a building set apart from the house. It would have arched windows on three sides. White walls and wood floors. It would have an antique tilted drawing table and lots of wooden flat cabinets. An old sofa, small table and chairs would be in the corner for lunch or a break. I’d have a couple of big cork boards to be “inspiration” boards. Counter tops and storage would wrap around 2 sides of the room.

Now for the fun stuff! I’d decorate it with drawings from my son, shells, rocks, etc and at Christmas I’d have a white Christmas tree with all sorts of crazy homemade and vintage ornaments.

  39. 39
    Kristen Powell says:

My dream creative space would be full of windows overlooking a beautiful view. It would have calming blue walls, lots of desk space and storage, all of the art supplies I could ever want, a large magnetic board which i could out my inspirations on, and a section to hang my art on the wall.

  40. 40
    Jennifer says:

My perfect creative space would be in a large loft. It would have lots of windows and natural light. There would be a bunch of high tables and each is set up with different types of supplies. One would have water colors, one would have paints, one would have collage supplies…. And the temperature would never be too hot or too cold. I can’t create when I’m cold!

  41. 41
    Stephanie says:

Just four walls to call my own.

  42. 42

My dream studio is on a blueprint just waiting to be built! It will have lovely windows over-looking woods and meadow on our farm. I can’t wait!

  43. 43

Robin’s Egg blue walls. White trim and tall baseboards with crown molding. Glass knobs on 3 panel doors. I need the farmhouse that it comes in too. LOL 2 large project tables in the center of the room (like the one from Pottery Barn, but I’ll make them myself), in black. Fabric covered corkboards and shelving around the room. White curtains with red pom-pom fringe and a delicate chandelier in the middle of the room. One wall would have a built in desk top along the entire length, for my sewing machine/serger. Curtains hung underneath to hid the shelves or drawers for storage. There would be an over-stuffed chair and ottoman by a large window to sit and embroider in. I’d love to see it upholstered in red with white polka dots. Peg hooks on the wall to hang current and completed projects on, and a child sized dressform. Oh, I could go on and on about this beautiful room I’ve created, only in my mind.

    Rachel says:

My dream space would, first of all, be large. Right now I work in a teeny, tiny room that I’m sure was the maid’s room in its former life. There would be a big window, maybe two, to let in natural light. The window(s) would have lovely curtains that could be closed against nasty weather or cold and there would be a good source of electric light so I can work at night. The walls would be soft green or yellow. The woodwork would be white. There would be lots of shelves to hold my quilting books and magazines, and extra-large closet for items to be tucked away, and a large antique dresser/armoire to store fabric. I would have original works of art on the walls, mine and others’. The floor would be hardwood – much easier to pick up those dropped pins than on the berber carpet that is in my present room! I would have a little fridge to keep healthy snacks and water, so I’m not always running down to the kitchen. I would NOT have a phone or a television, but there would be a separate desk for my laptop, a table for cutting, and another table to hold my sewing machine and serger. There would also be an overstuffed and very comfortable chair by the window for reading, dreaming , knitting or hand sewing. Heaven!

My dream workspace would be a separate building from my home so I could have a kiln and torch for metal smithing. I need lots of long counters and big windows for natural light. I love to organize my stuff so lots of room for organizing and storing things I might want later. My studio now is cold in the winter and I don’t like that so it needs to be warm in the winter and cool in the summer (it is my dream space). Oh and I would need lots of money so I could buy the equipment I want. :)

  47. 47
    Laurie says:

My dream space is very neutral, with a touch of warmth. Large pieces of furniture (desk, work table, china cabinet) and floors are of dark wood. Color comes from a large vintage rack full of ribbon and trims, a huge inspiration board, the work in progress, and a deep violet, velvet, tufted sofa.

  48. 48
    Paulette says:

my space would be butter yellow, with lots of storage containers with the little brackets for tags, mesh baskets and old large jars for bulbs and buttons. White old cabinets with old windows for the doors, a huge wood table for spreading out and ‘the machine’, a midwaist high workbench for working without hunching..lol.. and lots of natural light.. I have some of these things… but we all dream of the ‘perfect work/dream space’

  49. 49

a large room (duh), with lots of windows looking out on a garden and wildlife. Several tables of varying heights for different activities – a place for everything – within reach (Storage, storage, storage..) . Different ’stations’ for each craft / art – jewelry, paper, fabric, yarn, etc. And a place for the laptop/printer and all the inspiring magazines and books. And a big comfy loveseat to nap on. Thank you!!

    Randi says:

In my head I have this great picture of a room, with high ceilings, and tons of bookshelves, storing my craft books, my yarn and a wealth of buttons. There would be a big comfy chair, upholstered in green and pink stripes, for me to sit in as I knit. Another wall would hold jars and jars of my beading materials, arranged by color, and then a center table with many shallow drawers for my scrapbooking supplies. Empty wall space would be covered in framed artwork and anythign inspirational.
