It is possible to build an entire week’s worth of outfits out of one t-shirt and a pair of jeans as long as one is well equipped with the proper accessories. Merriam-Webster defines an accessory as “an object or device not essential in itself but adding to the beauty, convenience or effectiveness of something else.” Notice that nowhere does it say these objects must be limited to outfits. We here at the BSP believe in spreading as much beauty and convenience around as possible. It seems only fitting to include Avis Wampler of Avie Designs in this month’s accessories theme.  Wampler, a graphic designer, combines stunning patterns with eco-friendly paper products to create little pieces of beauty all around.

My personal color-coded library could well use some Apple Bookplates dressing up their pages. The letters my two year old sends to her Mimi (Grandma) cry out for a Bright Type Return Address Label adorning the back of the envelope. The 2010 Calendar (FYI:  100% of the proceeds from this calendar will be given to Yele Haiti) would add some serious shine to my work desk. It is, after all, held together by a jewel case. Beauty and convenience in one fell swoop.

I like something that is unusual, catches the eye and makes the person who is looking at it take a second look…and maybe even consider keeping it instead of tossing it.

I’ve been longing at Avie’s designs for a few months now, and am in dire need of new business cards.

I like bright and contemporary designs. I believe that stationery should help promote the writing (or the person, in the case of business cards). Stationery should never be busy…and Avie’s are a marvelous example of that!

I love bright bold colors, pinks and greens and blues and purples, and flourishes! Stripes and polka dots just don’t cut it.

I love prints that mimic henna or mehendi patterns. Picture it: Paisleys and swirls twist and turn out of one corner, pirouetting down the side and extending delicate limbs into the middle of the card, ending with a flourish that proudly directs the reader’s attention to the name and contact information present on the calling card. A design like this is perfect for everyone- the busy, harried mother of two boys can include the card with a batch of cookies for a teacher or neighbour and be thankful for the easy touch of elegance that it supplies; the non-profit that is trying to get off the ground can display its professionalism with the simple beauty of these business cards; the bakery tucked away in a historic downtown square will pick them because the intricacy of their buttercream designs matches the cards’ curlicues and will remind customers of the delicacies that they can order to both admire and enjoy. As for me? I like it because it reminds me of my history. It evokes memories of being in India and sitting for hours with other girls, laughing, telling stories, and waiting not-so-patiently for the paste on my hands to dry so that I could finally see the pumpkin-stained whorls trail down my fingers and amass in a flowery paradise in the center of my palms. But it reminds me, too, of the designs I used to aimlessly draw in the margins of my notes in grade school–petals around the three-punch holes on a piece of paper with twisted vines emerging and spiraling into their own patches of college-ruled garden, ripened by wavy rays of sunlight beaming from the top, right hand corner. Two parts of myself coming together in a pretty pattern- what stationery design could top that?

I like birds on my stationary. They can be whimsical or beautiful or dark. I’m not particular about what kind of bird it is, but anything with a bird will catch my eye.

Vintage patterns catch my eye. Something colorful and quirky, but romantic. Think how special an old envelope with a few vintage stamps look.
