DARLING DEXTER
Hi there! My name is Whitney and I’m the voice behind the design blog, Darling Dexter. I started my blog as a light-hearted space to share my latest projects and inspirations, and nearly three years later, I’m still writing, yay! :) Aside from my blog, I’m a photographer and spend most of my days shooting for the photography business that I share with my husband, Oh, Darling! I’m also in the process of developing a clothing line — so it may come as no surprise that my favorite things cover a broad range of categories.
- Liberty of London Fabric from Purl Soho
- West + Plum Vintage Plates
- Silhouette Business Cards & Stationery from Postal Press
- Marais USA Espadrille Wedges
- Contax 645
- Peanut Butter Cupcakes from Butter Lane
- Recycled Canvas Carryall

my sewing machine!
I could never store the antique rocking chair that was given to me by my grandmother.
My collection of antique glass decanters! Such eye candy!
I guess, I won’t be the first saying “my laptop”. I’m in bed with it right now. I work, eat, relax in its company. It warms my tummy on long winter nights :) It travels with me. It serves as a window to a wide wide world. It’s always eager to jump in its cozy gray cover and accompany me whenever I want – be it a cafe (latte! Cinnamon rolls! Plush armchairs! Two hours of joy!) or the library (well…. Work.)
Moreover, it’s red. It’s tiny. It’s beautiful. It’s right here saying hi to you from my bed!
p.s. I saw your place a while ago on AT and was positively shocked! Way to go!
Pictures of my two grown daughters (24 and 21 years old) who live far far away and are my true treasure. Looking at their pictures helps me cope with missing them.
my cork board. i must to hang my daily inspirations!
I could never ever store away my books! They’re like old friends to me, I can’t pick one to put away in storage…
These are beautiful! (crossing my fingers and hoping I win!) :)
my laptop! and photographs!
My toaster oven. We use it for everything!
My nail polish collection!! No matter what kind of hair day I’m having, if I’ve overslept, or if it’s pouring outside, my nails will always look good! I live in NYC too but I won’t budge on this even if some may think my collection is getting slightly out of hand.
My clothes, I guess… I layer my clothes a lot so I end up wearing some of the same clothes all year. Otherwise, my laptop.
My camera, you can find a memory in everything.
my plants! nothing makes a home more homey to me than some windowsill plants. I’d have to make room for them.
I have this gorgeous black and white photography of my mother holding my me and my sister when we were toddlers. I could never store that away. Other than that, I could never store my laptop. It’s an extension of my arms!
I could never store my paints and painted items… it makes me feel happy to have the things I use to create and those things I have created around me.
My polaroid cameras. I take pictures of absolutely everything. :)
My photo albums! I’m a paparazzi momma, taking photos everyday of my growing family. I love to have them around as a constant reminder on where I came from and who I hope to be.
My shoes! I have about 70 pairs that and love them all! Each pair is different enough that they add something special to an outfit that another pair just can’t! Having great shoes is a confidence and height booster and I can’t imagine having to narrow down my collection, even if just temporarily!
Letters letters letters… I have 8 pen pals at the moment and letters full of love completely surrounding me! There is no way I could ever store those away, I look at them constantly to remind myself of the amazing people in my life.
I moved to a bigger house and I finally have all the space I need… I never want to store anything ever again… I never want to store the many plants in my house and garden. I love having them around.
this is not the most practical thing ever, but i’d really need to keep every book on my favorite-books-ever shelf available. it’s not like i take them out and re-read them all the time. i just like them to be there. somehow it’s comforting to run my fingers over their spines, or to idly glance at their shapes. probably because i feel a strong solidarity with what’s inside these books…they just keep me company.
A crocheted blanket my grandmother made for me when I was a baby- it’s big and bulky, but it’s been with me my whole life- and is all the more precious to me now that my grandmother’s gone.
My camera! The though of never being able to take a picture of my latest project, or the way the light comes in to the kitchen, or of my sill husband and cats is just too much to bear. (And my sewing machine comes in a close second!!)
The one thing that I could never store away is my flute. I always need it at random times, for the most random reasons.
When I was little, my dad was a Native American enthusiast. He collected headdresses, blankets, artwork and kachina’s and every vacation we took together was to an annual Indian PowWow somewhere in the Midwest. We would dance around the circle to the drums, and immerse ourselves in the culture. Of course traditional dress was always appreciated and so my mother sewed my sister and I dresses and shawls, we wore traditional mocassins and my father sat my sister and I down one night and we made jewelry together. Using pony beads and leather strips we created chokers and breastplates. At the bottom of each breastplate my dad drilled holes in pennies from our birth year in the number of years old we were and hung them. Mine has 8 pennies from 1984. That and my choker are two of my most prized posessions and help me remember the amazing moments that I had with my father, the smell of the smoke, the beat of the drums and the swirl of colors as people danced around the fire honoring family, heritage and the world around them.
Could never store my cameras. I guess that means I should stop collecting different lenses. I couldn’t store my jewelry either, most of it runs in the family and is very important to me!
I could never store my books…for some reason I feel like I would inevitably need one and not have access to the one I need–it would make me anxious!
I could never store my family photos. I would be too afraid that something would happen to them and we like to look at them often.
I could never store the artwork I have been given/purchased over the years…it makes even the most boring, bland apartment feel like a home! :)
