PLOVER ORGANIC

Monday, June 8, 2009

by Miss K
I’m sure this surprises no one, but I am a big fan of tablecloths.  I always have one on the table in the kitchen (it looks so charming with a vase of fresh cut flowers on top) and I have a wide and varied assortment of more formal table clothes for the raised pinky dinners at the dining room table.  What can I say?  I have a penchant for pomp and circumstance.Plover, clearly, is a company perfect for my grandma chic heart.  Named after an endangered short-billed shorebird indigenous to the Great Lakes and the Pacific/Atlantic coasts, Plover is a home textile company unlike most in the industry.  Plover fabrics are organic cotton and block printed by hand. Each step of the manufacturing process complies with Fair Trade standards, uses water judiciously, and is low impact. And they are impossibly smart looking.  Miss B would pair the vine tablecloth and dots napkins with crisp white dishes.  I thinking the same set up would look smashing with my green bubble glass and milk glass collection.  Either way, it’s a recipe for tabletop success.

Plover is giving away one 60×60 tablecloth in VINE and six napkins in OLIVE DOTS to one lucky winner. Please answer the following question by Monday, June 2009: If you could have any six people, dead or alive, at your dinner party who would you choose to host?
Please check the Winners Page on Sunday, June 21, 2009.

Hahaha! This question makes me smile. It’s much too difficult for me to narrow it down to real people … so I’m going to go ahead and invite Colonel Mustard, Mrs. White, Professor Plum, Mrs. Peacock, Mr. Green, and Miss Scarlett to my dinner party at Mr. Boddy’s mansion. We will be meeting in the Lounge at 6pm SHARP! Dun, Dun, Dunnnn. This is going to be the wildest dinner party EVER!

My grandmothers (who I never met), Michelle Obama, Annie Liebovitz (the amazing photographer), my host mother in Germany, and my friend Jen (who is also my professor and my mentor).

I think it would be so cool to be surrounded by a gaggle of strong, independent, wise women…and I think its something that needs to be done more often!

    Annie says:

Limiting a party to six guests when you can invite anyone is almost impossible (I guess that’s why it’s imaginary)! I think I’d go with an all girl party: me (the hostess with the most-ess), Louisa May Alcott, L.M. Montgomery, Eleanor Roosevelt, Anna Quindlen, and my favorite English professor from college. Strong-willed, opinionated women who all understand (or understood) the power of the written word. Too bad this is all pretend…

  4. 54
    Alma says:

All of my exes–and they would not be allowed to lie to me. Once and for all, I’d finally get the truth about what happened from each of them!

    this is a fantastic question.

1.Elizabeth Taylor (great old school Hollywood stories)
    2.Robert Downing Jr. (the entertainer)
    3. Cole Porter (for music while sipping muscat)
    4. Paulo Coelho (for thoughtful insight, with a writer’s creativity)
    5. Edith Piaff (singing, drinking, laughing)
    6. Anne Morrow Lindberg (cool, calm, collected)

I can’t wait, I can just see it now.

    destri says:

    oh lets see…
    Audrey Hepburn (who wouldn’t)
Claude Monet (oh the presence, can you imagine?)
Adam Sandler (then I don’t have to worry if everyone is having a good time)
the guy who invented the wheel (just for fun)
Nie Nie (love to meet her)
    and Jesus (so many questions)
if you asked me tomorrow the list would probably change, but those peek my fancy today!
    Love this company BTW, beautiful….

I love this question almost as much as I adore tableclothes, placemats, cloth napkins…but especially tableclothes!

Here’s my list (admittedly it would be a lot longer but since you don’t have all day to read… :)

    2. Karl Lagerfeld

    4. Diane Arbus
    5. Andy Warhol

Having been through 3 years of infertility and pregnancy loss I would have to say that I would host my family. My husband (who is real) myself and our two kids that we’ve been waiting patiently for. Since that only adds up to 4 I would have my father in law who I never got the chance to meet and my late grandfather, 2 people who, I’m sure, would love to meet our children just as much as we would. No one exciting or famous, just the company we’ve been longing for around the table.

  11. 61
    Pam says:

I think I would choose to bring some of my good friends who I don’t get to see nearly often enough together – Tanya from Singapore, Courtney from Regina, Ron from San Francisco, and Donna and Leigh from Bangkok. I would then invite my hubby as well.

  12. 62
    Emma L says:

Oh wow, this is such a great question that I had to ponder my answer for more than a day. I think I would invite Lord Byron, Mark Twain, John Cleese, Cate Blanchett, Indira Ghandi and Coco Chanel. Coco would bring the champagne, Indira would fix some delicious na’αn, John would provide the entertainment and Cate would be her charming self while making sure that Mark and the lord did not get into a fight over some adverbial phrase. I would put my best frock on and swoosh around the room feeling happy and glorious that these esteemed six heroes of mine had decided to attend my beautifully decorated dinner party!

  13. 63
    Jenn F says:

I would have both of my husband’s grandfathers (they both passed away before we were married), my great-grandmothers (one passed away before I was born and the other while I was in elem. school) and of course my husband and I.

  14. 64
    Ladytink_534 says:

First and foremost, Walt Disney and then Jim Henderson, Audrey Hepburn, Ted Geisel (Dr. Seuss), my Meme (great-grandma), and Fred Astaire. Can you tell who my favorite people are?

  15. 65
    Anita VP says:

    Wow, only 6 eh.
Okay first my dad, so I could have one last meal with him. Mahatma Gandhi, Bono, Barack Obama, Dale Carnegie, and Julia Roberts. Ecclectic group yes. But all powerful, world changing people. And well Julia because I really think we could be friends.

  16. 66
    Melanie says:

    FIrst of all, My grandmother.
And the for the other five..
Bob Marley, John Lennon, William Shakespeare, and for eye candy, Mr, James McAvoy.
    :]

  17. 67
    Carey says:

This is a pretty easy one for me to answer- first, my dad, because he passed away when I was 13 and we’d have a lot of catching up to do, my grandpa who passed away last year, my grandma because I miss her and my three kids- whom my dad never had a chance to meet, the youngest my grandpa never met and because grandma never gets to see them enough.

  18. 68
    Tiffany says:

Instead of a dinner party can I have a tea party? This table decor would be perfect for a tea party! I would invite all of the fabulous women in my family, but I would invite my mother the way she was 10 years ago, when she was healthy and happy and wasn’t battling cancer. I’d pay much more attention to who she is and what makes her happy. Then I would have my great grandmother who I met as a child and loved, but would squeal at the idea of having a conversation with her as an adult. Also on the guest list would be my Aunt and Grandmother who are both amazing women who give me strength and who have been amazing teachers on how to be a lady! I’d also have a family friend there, Willene, who I haven’t seen in about 12 years. She was such a big part of my childhood. I’d love to see her again. Last but not least I’d have my best friend (who might as well be family) Christina with us all. What a wonderful party!

  19. 69
    Jennifer says:

The first person I’d invite would be Oprah, because I love what she’s doing to make the world a better place. And, I’d love to talk about books with her. I would also invite President Obama because I’m in awe of how he’s helping to change the face of America. Marilyn Monroe would get an invite, because I’ve heard so much about her that I’d like to be able to form my own opinion. And, she’s beautiful and I’d like to see her in person. Jackie Kennedy would also be there, although that could be awkward with Marilyn there. I think they both have enough class, though, not cause any weird moments. I’d also invite Jesus, but I wouldn’t want him to monopolize the conversation. And lastly, I’d invite my best friend, Sharon, because I would want someone with me who could help me go over the evening the next day.

    4. Jane Austen
    5. Patricia C Wrede (wrote a great set of books with a strong female lead that I greatly enjoyed when young and still read all the time)

All artists/creators that I think would have fascinating life stories. i enjoy all the things these people created and would love to talk to them…plus I think they would enjoy talking to one another.

    Christine C. says:

Hmm…this is a tough one. I don’t think I want to take this too seriously, so let’s do a vampire theme (you will have to excuse me, I stayed up watching True Blood for WAY to long last night).

On one side of the table, Sookie Stackhouse, Bill Compton and Lafayette from True Blood, love that Southern twang. On the other side, a little Twilight mania, Edward Cullen, Bella and Jacob. I would sit right at the head of the table…that’s right, no fear!

You know, that lovely tablecloth would be perfect for setting this table!

  33. 83
    Sally says:

Perez Hilton, Martha Stewart, Pablo Neruda, Jean Schlumberger, Grace Kelly, and Andy Warhol. You have poise, intellect, scandal, art and more culture than the tri-cities. Absolutely nobody could say it was dull party. :)

    Erin says:

I think I have to go with a theme here to narrow it down – authors of novels of manners. Edith Wharton, Henry James, Jane Austen, Evelyn Waugh, William Makepeace Thackeray, and let’s round if off with George Eliot. They would all have impeccable manners and razor wits, spend the entire night observing things I would never notice, and then each and every one would call me up the next day and gossip horribly.

    Beverly Ingle says:

Hand’s down, it would be: my grandpa and my mema (who I miss terribly), Harper Lee (my fave author), Abraham Lincoln (no explanation needed), Tom Vannatta (my brilliant 10th-grade English teacher from 20 years ago), and L. Ron Hubbard (just to find out what the heck he was smoking!).
