rae dunn on the bsp

{please visit Rae Dunn here}

I am originally from Argentina, and while I’ve lived in the U.S. since I was nearly one year old, there are some customs my family still holds on to.  The “picada” is one of them.  Very similar to Spanish tapas, the picada is just a collection of finger foods to nibble on while the main meal cooks.  Thanks to my love of picadas, I also have a healthy love for platters, dishes, and, pretty much, all things made with clay.  Needless to say, Rae Dunn has been on my radar for quite some time.

I may not have to introduce many of you to Rae Dunn, a California native and ceramist of 14 years.  You may know her line Rae Dunn by Magenta, which is sold in stores nationwide, or you may have seen her in Lucky, Cookie, or Bon Appétit.  Dunn’s Japanese inspired wabi-sabi aesthetic isn’t hard to forget, especially when you consider that every piece in her collection is hand made from start to finish.  I can’t get enough of the milky white pieces in her collection, stamped so sweetly with dark, classic type.  Many of the pieces can be customized, and I’m half tempted to ask Dunn to stamp “Property of Miss K.” across the whole lot.

Rae Dunn is giving away one small plate with a poem that reads, “let yourself be silently drawn by the stronger pull of what you really love.” In order to win, please answer the following question by Wednesday, August 26, 2009.

What is the most spontaneous thing you have ever done?

Please start checking the winner’s box on Wednesday, September 2, 2009 to see if you won. Good Luck!

    I met 3 wonderful best-girlfriends while studying abroad in Copenhagen. We bonded over bikes, cold weather, hot Danes, and copious amounts of alcohol. (Ten years later, we’re still close, even though we live in 2 different countries and 3 states!) But our spontaneous act was to throw our carefully made travel plans to the wind – tossing out weeks of meticulous routing and accommodation research – and jump about the “Orient Express” as it was departing the Vienna train station. We just liked the sound of it – and it was heading to Budapest, a place we hadn’t even considered in our research! It was magical to take off without a care – to truly be unplanned – and to do it with my best friends.

    I took a trip to Mexico for a week by myself. I was 19 and didn’t speak a word of Spanish. It was such an adventure, and I loved every moment of it!

    I went to New York City by myself for my 25th Birthday not having a place to stay or knowing if anyone I knew would be around. I got off the plane and started calling numbers and finally called this hot guy who I barely knew but gave me his number last time he was in Boston. He and a friend of his took me out dancing. We ended the night in bed together. It was a great 25th birthday.

    I ran off and got married in Las Vegas, and I have never regretted for one minute doing that instead of having a ceremony. It was incredible fun and absolutely no stress.

    With very little notice, hubby and I decided to go to St. John (USVI). We camped on the beach, snorkeled, and had an amazingly great time in the turquoise waters and soft sand. And we came home with NASTY sunburns.
