December Theme :: The Gift of Receiving

Tuesday, December 3, 2013

Happy December, friends! This is the countdown, right? The crunch of time when we get our gifts together for our friends and loved ones and create lists and make treasures from hand and search far and wide for the perfect gift for the special people in our lives. The act of giving someone a gift you picked out especially for them is something that can’t be replaced. But let’s talk about something even more fulfilling: lets talk about receiving.

Perhaps one of the greatest lessons we learn as we navigate this world is the ability to receive a gift with grace. For some reason, we hold onto this strange idea that it is somehow better to shrug off the gifts we are given, without realizing that this negates the beauty of the interaction. To truly accept a gift (and we aren’t just talking material gifts, obviously) it is necessary to first feel worthy. It is essential to have an open heart and a humble graciousness. It is required to be present, to connect. The greatest gift we can give ourselves this season is the gift of receiving.

So, what did you receive this year?God has been good to me this year. I reeivced Grudem’s Systematic Theology, two books by Mark Driscoll (The Radical Reformission and Confessions of a Reformission Rev), two books by C.J. Mahaney (Humility: True Greatness and Living the Cross-Centered Life), Mark Dever’s Nine Marks of a Healthy Church and J.I. Packer’s Knowing God. That’s just books alone, but I won’t go into the unnecessaries. What was your favorite gift?Oy tough one. I haven’t read them all yet so I’ll have to reserve judgment on that. What did you learn this Christmas? It’s so much more beautiful to serve and emphasize the Gospel than to look at the marvelous traditions that we keep. It sometimes just deepens the traditions.
