There are a few treasures in life that are worth seeking. The perfect ice cream, a song that makes you dance, a trusty mechanic. There is one treasure that rises to the top of the list, however: quality skincare products. Sure, mass market products are inexpensive and easily accessible but there is a cost. From chemicals to corporate politics, our dollars are spent everyday in the community we choose. Skincare is one of those communities where I do my best to choose independent and hand-crafted. (When I can, of course.) I’m excited to share one of my finds with you.

Brandy Monique is the beauty behind the brand, FIG + YARROW. Monique’s line is full of hand-crafted, small batch health and beauty products that utilize natural products in a way that both respects and enhances their beneficial qualities. FIG + YARROW is a brand that you bring into your life and you hold onto, like any good relationship. These products bring the purity of natural living to your skincare routine without losing the efficacy or aesthetic. Browse through the shop and find the product that speaks to you. Listen to it. Let FIG + YARROW lead the way.

FIG + YARROW is giving away one Sea Scrub to one lucky winner! To enter to win, please answer the following question no later than Tuesday, March 25th.
Please visit FIG + YARROW and tell us: What is your current skincare routine? (P.S. Do you have any beauty secrets? We would love to hear them!)
Start checking the winner’s box on Tuesday, April 1st, to see if you’ve won!

my skincare routine is super easy. I use a home blended mix of castor and extra virgin olive oils on my face, and an organic body wash on the rest of my body. I use coconut oil to moisturize and  add sea salt or sugar to a small amount of my oil blend or body wash for exfoliating.

I have a super easy routine…for my face it’s a mix of baking soda and water…that’s it. For the rest of my body I love to use sugar scrubs and body oils when I have the time. I would love to have a more luxurious skin care routine though. 🙂

A washcloth, soap and water. Lol, I guess I’m old fashioned!

My skincare routine is a bit in flux right now. My skin is both sensitive and stubborn, so it’s hard to find the right solution. It has a tendency to be super dry, causing flakes and small bumps from clogged pores, so I need a scrub that will work magic without being super harsh. In the meantime, I’ve found that mankua honey is a great natural mask/spot treatment that heals and moisturizes quite nicely.

i have suffered from adult acne for years, and i finally found Jan marine products, which are the only thing that work for me.

My beauty secret is: have fun!!!!  I’ve always struggled to care for my skin as part of a disciplined regime.  But then, I started looking up home remedies and trying them.  I’ll use mint from my garden or slather strawberries on my face (mainly in the summer).  Because I’m a busy mom/student, I often don’t have time to do this – and I feel great when I just remember to wash my face AND use astringent!!!  However, it’s been embracing the delight of different ingredients, different textures, different smells, and experimenting that has meant I am more healthy – not the ever present pressure that I look good.  (Pooh.  What a terrible reason to take care of yourself.)

I use African black soap and I alternate between facial oils(maracuja, argan, carrot seed, and rosehips) depending on my skin’s needs. My tip: A little extra virgin olive oil on a cotton ball makes the perfect eye makeup remover!

Coconut oil after showering for my dry skin and plain soap and water.

I am aggressively terrible about a skin care routine. I have the tendency to acquire products that then collect in a basket while I proooomise myself that I’ll do a mask later this week, etc. (Though some of them are just truly disappointing, which is why they don’t get used.) The only thing I bust out with any regularity is a tub of Angels on Bare Skin from LUSH which lives in my shower and gets used 2-3 times per week. No moisturizer, no toner, and I rarely wear makeup, so not much in the way of makeup removal.

I keep telling myself I’d like to have a routine, but at this point in my 32 years of existence, it might be a lost cause. (Though talk to me in 3 or 4 years when I start to panic about my skin, I guess?)

I use all natural ingredients for all my skin care needs – I use the OCM to cleanse my skin, sugar scrub for exfoliation, raw shea butter/argan oil mix as my moisturizer, and coconut oil as my body moisturizer after I shower. Using natural oils that my skin responds to favorably is key to my skin care health.

My skincare routine is pretty basic….water only on my face, followed by witch hazel for astringent and loads and loads of sunblock. And while basic is good, I would love to try your products, because I believe that continuous small treats is what really keeps life exciting!

not much of a routine, i’ve tried buying products but they just sit there arnd collect dust 🙁 most of the time i just use cetaphil to wash my face, followed by a moisturiser. i recently moved to a drier climate from my warm and humid one, so i’ve been using this amazing handmade calendula cream from a company called “more than skin deep” (it’s based in tasmania, australia) which i bought at their stall at the amazing salamanca market! it’s really perfect for me under these conditions, but i’ll have to change it up when i move back to my warm humid country soon.

as for skincare secrets, it’s not exactly a secret, but i put toothpaste (the white kind, not the gel kind) on pimples for around 10min before washing it off. it really helps sooth the redness and swelling, and if it’s not too serious the pimple goes away the next day.

    Angie says:

My current skin care routine involves using a simple, gentle face wash, and then I use some toner that I put in a cotton ball. After that, I put on a serum cream and my eye cream. Lastly, I put a thin layer of moisturizer for extra moisture. A couple of days a week, I’ll use my face scrub to exfoliate instead of using my face wash.

Face wash and water for quick freshening-up. A pack of Fullers earth and water to take away grime, remove tan and brighten up my skin like nothing else. When the 5 yo is not beating down the bathroom door, the pack also goes on the feet and arms for an extra glow 🙂

I do oil cleansing with a mix of jojoba, almond and castor oil for my face!

    Jessica says:

My routine is as easy possible. I’ve learned from experience that because I’m usually falling into bed super late and tired, I just won’t do anything that’s too complicated. I keep waterless wipes and nighttime moisturizer in my nightstand. No matter how tired I am, I can always manage that. I save the exfoliation and masks for the shower, where I want to linger anyway!

My skincare routine is still getting its sea legs, I’m afraid. Having–fingers crossed–recently gained the upper hand in the battle against acne that lasted past teenagerism I’m still trying to figure out which products will keep my skin clean, relatively matte, and not destroy it with harsh chemicals. Boots Botanicals makes a lovely willowbark moisturizer/spf that I love, and I’m experimenting with cleansers at the moment.

Boots cleansing milk and rose water (for rosacea), then Trader Joes’s coconut oil to moisturize from head to toe.

My regimen is super easy: gentle cleanse, gentle moisturizer (whatever I happen to have at home), drink lots of water and never, EVER put alcohol on my skin… and of course, SPF every day, year round.

    Emily S. says:

I wash my face every night with coconut oil and a muslin cloth, use a toner of raw apple cider vinegar diluted in distilled water, apply vitamin E oil around my eyes, press Pai Skincare’s rosehip oil onto the rest of my face, and finish up with a tiny bit of homemade lotion made of shea, cocoa butter, coconut oil, and sweet almond oil.  I started this routine about 5 months ago and it has made such a huge difference in my skin.

My beauty secrets are to get monthly facials, drink lots of water, and don’t wear make up. I’ve never worn make up and I’m knocking on 40s door and still getting carded!

    Monica Borge says:

My skincare routine is simple and works wonderfully. When I wake up it is 3 Steps: Moisturizer, Sunscreen, Makeup. Before I go to bed there are 2 steps and one of them is my best beauty secret! I wash my face and then lather up with Vaseline (it is the best moisturizer and makeup remover I have ever used)!

    Kim Henrichs says:

I have used a Mario Badescu face wash forever. I love it and a $12 bottle lasts me almost a year!  I wash my face at night, and I use an exfoliant once per week.  I use a good night moisturizer every night.  Key to my best skin is lots of water! Nothing beats it.

  26. 26
    Anna L says:

My skin care routine consists of washing my face with soap and water! Nothing else, I just wash my face when I wake up and before I go to bed.  After I wash it, I put on my Neutrogena moisturizer with SPF 15! (gotta get that sunscreen on to protect my face!)  I’m starting to transition to a Bert’s Bees face moisturizer, because it’s thicker, and I have dry skin.  Other than that I try not to touch my face throughout the day, because you never know what’s going on with your hands!

Normally, I don’t treat my pimples, trying to just let them go away on their own.  But when I do treat them, I put carmex on it, and it really helps with the swelling!

I tried all the fancy creams and emulsions and lotions… I’ve gone back to a bar of tea tree oil soap. If my skin gets dry, a salty scrub and a basic skin cream over night. Most importantly… Lots of sunsceeen , fall, winter, spring and summer!

    Nikki says:

My skincare routine is a pleasure! I really enjoy taking care of myself and am happy to finally be figuring out what works for me at almost 40!!  Drinking lots of water, taking fish oil pills, spf, a good dry body brush, grapeseed oil, body scrub in the shower, yummy smelling lotion, face oil, a light moisturizer or serum for eyes and treating sunspots, acne (it is a travesty to deal with both chin whiskers and pimples but that’s life).  I think pure ingredients, pleasant texture, and alluring scent are the best parts of good skin care products.

    Sparrow says:

I’ve always had the same routine: wash, toner, moisturize. Twice a day. I’ve always been attracted to skin care products, and really, for most of my life, my skin has been great. But, I’m getting older and the products I’ve used don’t work the same way they did and I need something to bring out my skin’s natural brilliance again. On another note, I love what you said about not losing the moment to moment happiness in pursuit of the greater, beloved goal. I had my third baby a few weeks ago, my third boy, I should say, and in dealing with my post-partum hormones, I lose sight of the beauty of this motherhood, which is what I love and what I’ve chosen as my life’s passion (for this season, at least), but I lose the beauty of it in the moment to moment. Thank you for sharing. I feel buoyed by your words.

Gentle cleanser, alcohol free lavender witch hazel, and carrot moisturizer. I finally have control over my skin at the age of 33. It’s been a long road.

You mean when I remember to wash my face? Coconut oil for moisturizing and apple cider vinegar as a toner. Is it working? As I get older, my eyesight is getting worse…so I’d say yes;)
