Of all the senses, smell is the one I count on most when it comes to checking in with how I feel about something. My tastes change, my sight has a selective memory, and my hearing tends to be contextual. (Granted, these are all vague blanket statements, but bear with me.) Smell is the one thing that never changes for me. It is directly connected to my heart, metaphorically speaking. Familiar scents bring me back to a place and time and new ones immediately root me in the present. To this end, when I wear a scent on my skin, it is always a natural oil that reminds me to be myself. After all, nothing helps us stay connected to ourselves than our own skin.

Issa Dixon is an aromatherapist with a wealth of horticultural knowledge who launched her own line of essential oils, Hollow & Ridge. Dixon’s three signature blends, Calm, Arouse, and Balance are a carefully curated trio of therapeutic and beautiful smelling concoctions that bring the best of nature to the palm of your hand. Handcrafted in small batches, Hollow & Ridge oils are a surefire way to stop and smell the roses (or vetiver and lavender, as the case may be.)

Two definitive scents will instantly put me in a good mood: 1). the smell of my childhood neighborhood on a warm spring day after everyone has been outside cutting their grass, mulching, and taking care of their yards and 2). that peculiar smell in the air right before it starts to snow.

It’s hard to pick just one scent for a favorite. Right now, as spring as just getting into full swing in New England it’s the smell of fresh cut grass. Last week my favorite scent was a patch of woods starting to come to life. Soon the lilacs will bloom and I will be certain that they are my favorite scent. Come July, I will be certain that the smell of grass and earth in the hot summer sun is my favorite, as I lay on a blanket in the park and read.

I can’t pick one scent, but my top 3 are: peony, lavender and water. By water I mean rain, the ocean/beach, not the ‘inspired’ joke companies come up with.

I love the smell of jasmine and ylang ylang. I used these scents in my babies rooms when they were very small. They make me think of late night snuggles and first smiles and tiny adorable outfits.

I love the smell of gardenias. No matter where I am, if I smell gardenias, I have to stop and smell the flowers, literally haha. The smell transports me to different moments – walking back from my brother’s college graduation in SF, laughing with my friend as she put a sprig in her bosom for the natural perfume, and being at home with my family and the scent of gardenias gently enveloping us.

Lily of the Valley we had a plant brought from my uncle’s farm garden at our first house. Luckily we were told it spreads like crazy and we planted it around a tree but the scent would fill the air when it bloomed. It was also the powder my grandma used and when my sister and I were young she used to let us use it when we stayed over after our baths. Scents can really trigger wonderful memories!

My favorite scent is my smudge stick of sage and lavender… there is an instant smokiness that cleanses as it burns, but the sweetness lingers and provides a feeling of calmness for days.

When I was little, my mom had a little potted bush by the kitchen table that flowered once a year in tiny petaled clusters. She used to call it candy-flower to me. Years later, I learned it was Sweet Osmanthus, Such a beautiful smell!

    Carolyn says:

I doubt this comes in an essential oil, but occasionally I will get a whiff of a hair gel my husband used to wear when we were randy teenagers, and my heart skips of beat. It’s hardly a natural scent, but it’s so viscerally connected to the memory of falling in love.

Otherwise, lavender. It reminds me of my grandmother.

    Elizabeth says:

Frankincense!  It has such a sweet, deep woodsy citrus smell to me.   It is stimulating and uplifting and all together…delightful.   It makes me feel grounded at the same time it is a bit free and light.  It’s my favorite scent to have in my home (and in my car when it gets smelly with kids!) to try to restore some sort of balance.  One of my friends once said it smelled like chai tea to him – and I think he’s right.  It has a warm, enveloping, sweet quality.

    Nikki says:

My absolute favorite scent is vanilla, it makes me feel sweet and clean and sensual and cozy all at once.  It is amazing how scents are so connected to feeling and emotions and experiences–what a wonderful thing!

    Sparrow says:

Your childhood living in WV reminds me of my grandparents ranch. My dad grew up on a cattle ranch in rural Montana with no neighbors and the land as his playground and little else. I loved to go there during my summers and run wild with my cousins. In the middle of this remote wilderness my city-girl grandmother grew the most luscious rose garden, making the rolling plain bloom like Eden. The smell of roses always reminds me of her and her tenacity, the grit and grace it took to carve beauty out of isolation and solitude.

ehh not sure if it’s a good thing but many of my favourite smells are food-related: the scent of fresh roasted coffee because it’s very deep and rejuvenating and it reminds me of my dad; fried garlic and shallots because it’s the base of almost all of my family’s homecooked dishes (well we’re singaporean chinese) and white musk from the body shop (ok this isn’t related to food haha), because it’s my mum’s classic scent, and it’s both classy and comforting without smelling to dated!

I am extremely smell sensitive and almost every sent will give me a massive headache. But there’s always been one scent that doesn’t do that. The smell of tea. I am a compulsive tea drinker and breathing in the aroma of tea has always just made me feel a little bit better and stronger.

Rain here in the desert.  It’s so rare, it’s a magnificent scent

  34. 34
    Jennifer says:

I like scents that are natural and remind me of happy memories. In the summer, the scent of freshly cut grass reminds me of chasing after my dad as he rode around the yard cutting the lawn. The smell of pine trees reminds me of camping in Maine where I had my first kiss. The smell of damp leaves reminds me of jumping in giant leaf piles with my sisters when we were little.

  35. 35
    Jennifer says:

Mmmmm…my husband.  Can you bottle that?  I’d especially love it now given that he’s relocated for work and the kids and I have another month before joining him…hard to be apart.  Love his smell!

My husband and I just started a bakery.  Our sourdough recipe is just about perfect and there’s nothing like a fresh batch of it straight out of the oven.  We have a daughter with numerous food allergies, just one of the many reasons we wanted to start a bakery. Sourdough bread is one of the few things safe for her, which make me love the smell even more.

For me.scents change..what’s my favorite in this moment after visiting your shop, would be a rose patchouli…2000 petals is a lot for a small amount of oil..Now if I were to purchase in the morning my mood would be more citrus..something to awaken my mind..And soul..So for me it’s very dependent on  the time of day…and my mood…your products look lovely…

It’s cheesy to name my newborn’s head as my favorite scent, right? He’s nine days old and I’m so in love, I can’t stop sniffing his hairy little head. In the interest of something sellable, though, it’s a combination of lemon and lavender. Love it in food and just to smell.

Nature. Flowers, roses, lavender, jasmine, etc. Specially the fresh smell of leaves and grass washed away after a stormy summer rain. Ahh, so soothing, refreshing, revigorating and energizing.
