“For my part I know nothing with any certainty, but the sight of the stars makes me dream.” These words from Vincent Van Gogh clarify something I’ve felt since childhood: that the night sky holds the answers to any question I might have. When I was little, I always thought the stars were jewelry, and I assumed the sky knew better than to wear jewelry when it was storming outside. I looked at the stars as adornments in the blanket of black velvet above me and my dreams were woven into each twinkling reflection. Yes, I’ve learned the scientific nature of such things since then, but I’m starting to think my childhood assumptions were much more romantic. I often think of my own jewelry as starlight. And occasionally, I find myself wishing on my rings.
Last Prize, the husband and wife team of Kelsey Dugan and James Kozar, have created a line that brings to life my theory that the stars are jewelry we can wear. Each handcrafted piece pays homage to the beauty that lies above us and grants accessibility so that we, too, can wear the stars on our skin. Take a look at this Matchstick Necklace and this Jupiter Bangle and tell me you don’t feel the magic of the universe. The name alone showcases the fact that (no matter how big the dream), everyone wins. For every first prize, there is a last prize. And sometimes the honorable mention is worth more than every star in the sky.
