Kilimanjaro (web)

There are days when I need a little something to make me feel grounded again; times when I browse my favorite online stores and create wishlists and boards full of all of my favorite finds. While “retail therapy” is the common term, I like to call it “curating treasures.” For me, this is a time when I can let my mind clear, scroll through beautiful goodies, and let my heart focus on the things that make it smile. It is a mindless and yet engaging way to connect back to my inner self and re-energize my vision for what makes me happy. Then, I can focus on the daily tasks, the larger goals, the reality of what needs to get done. (Okay, occasionally there is shopping.)

Leah Singh is another one of my finds that I am so excited to share with you. Singh works with native Indian artisans to create bold and geometric jewelry and pillows that pay homage to traditional methods and patterns. I already have an unhealthy obsession with throw pillows and am convinced this one needs to be on my couch, like yesterday. And the gorgeous jewelry is sophisticated, chic, timeless. The seamless mix of two cultures is radiated throughout the entire Leah Singh collection and I’m excited to see the collections grow (in my own home.)

Leah Singh is giving away one Kilimanjaro Web necklace to one lucky winner! To enter to win, please answer the following question no later than Thursday, June 6th. Comments now closed…good luck!

    Right now I’m obsessed with the Vampire Weekend cover of “I’m Going Down.” It was originally released by Bruce Springsteen, in 1985, on the Born in the U.S.A. album. I’ve been a lifelong fan of the Boss, but Born in the U.S.A. has never been my favorite album of his, and this track in particular never really did anything for me. This new version by VW is fun and poppy, and it makes me want to drive around all day with the windows down and the song on repeat.

    just learnt emily sande’s read all about it part III from watching attraction (a shadow theatre troupe) on youtube and i’ve been humming it ever since! it isn’t exactly a spring/summer song but the words hold so much meaning, it’s like a reminder to make my summer holidays meaningful for others too ūüôā

    “Night Moves” by Bob Seger…this time of year, end of school, late spring/early summer, always makes me feel a little nostalgic and that dusky time of day is my favorite to sit it out on the porch steps remembering and daydreaming. ¬†In a week or so when the days get HOT, I’ll move on to a different more summer-y playlist of songs. ¬†But right now this song hits me right where I’m feeling it.

    Year after year, celebration by Kool and the Gang is the perfect song for the start of summer. Hearing it reminds me so much of what it felt like to get out of school on the final day of the year!

    My husband and I just made a (hugely) rash decision and bought a grand piano. Completely cleaned out our bank accounts. The piano now sits in a room with no furniture. But, in the evenings, my husband sits down to play while our two, wild children run around the room. He plays and sings Georgia On My Mind and Someone to Watch Over Me, and it fills every emptiness.

    ¬† ¬†My mom used to sing this all the time when I was younger as soon as it started getting hot around here( which is march hahaha….)I think besides my mother, Sam Cooke’s version is my fav.
    ¬† Might I also add, these carved necklaces are exquisite!! thanks for offering the opportunity to have one, I’m really smitten with them

    For some reason, my favorite song right now is MGMT’s “Electric Feel”….the laid-back and slow music reminds me of hanging out on the grass at the park with my dogs. I like to do that during the spring/summer when the weather is great.

    Kentucky’s state song: ‘My Old Kentucky Home’. I’m originally from Louisville, home of the Kentucky Derby but now live far away. My Old Kentucky Home is sung to open the derby race, which is always held on the first Saturday in May. It always signals the start of warm weather for me. (In fact in Louisville you know not to plant your summer veggies until Derby Day). During this derby, which I spent several states away, the song was especially meaningful:

    “The sun shines bright in the old Kentucky home
    ‘Tis summer, the people are gay;
    The corn top’s ripe and the meadow’s in the bloom,
    While the birds make music all the day;
    The young folks roll on the little cabin floor,
    All merry, all happy, and bright,
    By’n by hard times comes a-knocking at the door,
    Then my old Kentucky home, good night!”

    I’m obsessing over Florida Georgia Line’s “Cruise” – it is the epitome of summer and makes me want to flash back to being in high school just driving around with my friends!

    Emma says:

    REM”s “It’s the end of the world (as we know it)”. I live in NJ and here the summer months feel like death: insanely hot, terribly humid, and constantly plagued with thunderstorms. Conversely, springs are incredibly comfortable, beautiful and exciting. The turn from spring to summer always feels like a moment of sheer horror.

    The newest song on my spotify, one that I could listen to over and over in the car with the windows down, is “Downtown” by Lady Antebellum. Go out on the town, even if you’re alone, sing as loud as you possibly can, and live carefree. We have nothing left to lose.

  19. 19
    Rinny says:

    Two songs are my go-tos when spring turns into summer: Last Dance With Mary Jane (the lyric “I feel summer creepin’ in and I’m tired of this town again” is just epic) and American Girl – both by Tom Petty.

    Actually, Tom Petty is my favorite summer music – any album, any song.

    I love Jens Lekman’s “Sweet summer night on Hammer Hill”

    Kadi says:

    So maybe this is me being a cheezeball… but “Summertime” sung by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong is my classic go-to summer song. They give me chills… and nothing starts the FL summer off better than driving down the interstate with the windows and sun roof open… wind whipping your hair around like Medusa… while belting out the lyrics alongside some of the greats. Goosebumps in 90 degree heat – now that’s something!

    Right now it’s Either These Days Are Ours by Emma Hewitt, I Love IT by Icona Pop or Try To Be Love by Sunlounger and Zara Taylor.¬†

    1.  It is a little hard for me to think about music when I look at this beautiful necklace.
    2.  I am not sucking up.
    3. I’m a graduate student so I spend a lot of time listening to music to motivate myself to keep writing, to keep going.
    4.  I am also a mother so music at home functions very differently.  There are a lot of dance parties and my 4 year old and I use music as a way to be together.
    5. Although I have “adult” songs that move me, the truth is, there is nothing better for me than my daughter’s favorite song, Sarah Mclauchlan’s version of ¬†“The Rainbow Connection.” ¬†
    6. ¬†One day, after listening to it on repeat, my daughter said to me, “We’re lovers and dreamers, right?” ¬†I can’t imagine anything more than that the embodies the present season for me.
