One of the benefits of working here at the BSP is the opportunity to be inspired on a daily basis by the people we come into contact with. There is no shortage of sunshine ’round these parts, that’s for sure. On occasion, we find ourselves so inspired we have to share our finds with you again. Such is the case with today’s contributor, Meera Lee Patel. The work in Patel’s shop is full of detailed sophistication and incredible style, but more than that, each piece is full of personality and a warmth you just cannot fake. Oh, the colors of that bicycle print are gorgeous.

I have lots of “favorite” animals, so this answer changes often, but today I’m going with reindeer. I love their antlers and their gentle faces and I can put up images of them year-round without being accused of Christmas-ing it up (which secretly is exactly what I’m doing!). The only painted art I own is a canvas of reindeer my husband surprised me with as a Christmas gift after I fell in love with it at a restaurant in October (he drove an hour away to get it directly from the artist herself!). Love the “blossoming caribou” print in your shop!

Elephants. Beyond being awe-inspiring giants I just love how they are so supportive and protective of their clans. It always makes me say awww when I see a baby elephant with its momma. And really who didn’t fall in love with elephants after watching Dumbo?

My favorite animal is my dog Lola. I’m actually a cat person and potty training Lola nearly put me over the edge, but no other creature in the world loves me the way that she does. A aspire to be all that she deserves.

My favorite animal changes on a weekly basis, but I’ve really been into manatees lately. They look so kind and sweet…Just floating around underwater eating grass…

I love sharks, I read the national geographic mag about them til it fell apart as a child. I loved how sleek they are, and how we didn’t really know a lot about them.

Maybe it’s a throw back to my elementary school days, but I just love dolphins (Can Lisa Frank get a woot, woot? HOLLAH!). They’re so smart and fast and social. Not to mention, excellent jumpers. And they beat up sharks (or scare away, whateves), which is A-OK in my book.

My favorite animal has varied and changed throughout my childhood to present. I didn’t ever have many pets, especially compared to my family and some friends, but always took an interest in animals in general. I like to think about each individual animal and what they represent, as far as their strengths and weaknesses. It’s fascinating to imagine the powers that they can posses! For instance, dogs have the ability to sniff out sicknesses in people as well as many other things.
If I had to pick one favorite animal, it would have to be the medusae jellyfish. During my recent visit to the Monterey Bay aquarium in Monterey California, I was entranced with the jellyfish exhibit going on at that time. The different forms they could take, as well as various colors and sizes, had me awestruck and I was able to get many great pictures during the visit.

I like elephants. they are a reflection of luck. I remember when I was younger my grandfather would always tell me, “i wish for you to be like an elephant” He always said it in armenian. I didnt really understand him. Then years later he told me that he heard one time that elephants have a wonderful memory. He told me “elephants are careful” I later read on into indian belief on elephants and it said somewhere that they look after eachother very carefully. I read in a book on Hindu mythology that when they found a fellow elephant dead they would make a noise alarming the others that one of them had passed and silently acknowledge the passing, caringly. Now that he is slowly losing control of his body through ALS, this interest in elephants makes even more sense.

As I’m sure many are alike, my favorite animal is an elephant. The strength, loyalty, wisdom, and compassion that elephants are known to have is something that I strive for within myself. I believe it is important to always be growing emotionally, mentally, physically, and spiritually. There are paintings and sculptures of elephants around my house as an everyday reminder to be the person I strive to be in this world.

The animal that has currently inspired me would be the deer. Their peaceful quite nature intrigues me and I love the unique designs their antlers create. Meera Lee’s depiction of these beautiful creatures captures their essence in such an intricate way, surrounding them with my other favorite thing, flowers. I truly admire your vision and work.

The link is a picture of my earliest memory of my Halloween costumes that my mom used to hand make for me. There are peep holes at the bottom and I held it to my face and walked around. I was unbelievably thrilled that my mom had made a giraffe costume for me. I remember being so proud while trick-or-treating, I’m not sure exactly what of. Maybe it stemmed from being impossibly close to being a real giraffe; people kept telling me they thought a real giraffe was at their door. Now it’s more of a piece of memory that I can still physically touch and see with all the artistry and love my mom put into my costume. It’s one of the few treasures that I still have that are so impeccably my mother. And I guess since so much of my childhood was spent loving this long necked creature, it’s still my favorite.

Always and forever Elephants. I have loved them since I was little and my affection for them has only grown in the years since. Our wedding guests even sponsored a WWF elephant as a gift to my husband and me. Not only are elephants beautiful creatures, but everything I’ve learned about them makes them all the more endearing (They communicate through their feet! They are a matriarchal society! They respect the bones of their dead!).

Hey, so inspired my Meera Lee’s work! I am an artist and capoeirista and I love wolves. I love their intelligence, strength, unity as a pack, playfulness and curiosity. There is a brilliant book by Clarissa Pinkola Estés called Women Who Run With Wolves all about understanding how to connect to your true, wild, free and soulful self. Reading it has helped me so much and I always look to wolves for inspiration and to reconnect myself with her words and feel like a free, powerful woman, able to create and live soulfully.
