Milled-Cheese-Board-2

{please visit Milled here}

Since we’re all about bringing the sunshine in this month, let’s talk food, shall we? Hands down, my favorite meal is any variation (and marriage) of charcuterie/tapas/crudite/cheese. To be completely honest, I could eat a delicious plate of appetizers for dinner every night of the week. If we are ever at a party together with a buffet table, you can always find me standing next to it up to my elbows in cheese. And I’m not ashamed to admit it. There is also something incredibly fulfilling about creating a bounty of meats and cheeses and olives and jams on a wooden board on a random Thursday night.

Matt Voight founded Milled Home Goods Co with his wife, Hillary, and their passion and love for stunning design shines. With a perfect marriage of rustic and modern, Voight’s woodworking background (and pedigree) serves as the catalyst for showcasing the type of furniture and other home goods you absolutely want to spend your days with. Have you seen the Tamarack Credenza? I can’t get over it, can you? Then there are the cheese boards. My dinner just got real, y’all. Milled is on the menu.

    The traditional Italian Christmas Eve dinner includes 7 fish (actually called 7 fishes!) and every year my mom makes spaghetti to go along with the fish. The 7 change from year to year – we’ve been known to have a tin of sardines on the table if we couldn’t work a 7th into the meal! To me, it’s less about the taste of the meal and more about the tradition of it. My mother, her mother and her grandmother have always prepared spaghetti and 7 fish for Christmas Eve – it’s been a constant part of the holiday for me. Sometimes food is more about tradition and family than it is about taste.

    Anything that 1. puts a bread plate in front of you and 2. ends with dessert. You simply cannot fail.

    Brotzeit! In Germany, we put together a platter of various deli meats, sausages, cheeses, rolls, and rye bread. I’m an ADD eater and prefer to sample a little of everything rather than gorge on one item so the “deli” platter is perfect. You can’t go wrong with the various pork meats and quality add-ons. My mouth is watering just thinking about it!

    We call it “summer dinner”. Cheese, grapes, crusty bread, tomatoes, sausage…basically picnic food. We have it at least once a week in the summer and it is very filling. There is just something basic and wonderful about having that one special meal that reminds you of summer time.

    I love to make fresh pesto from the bounty of our garden (sometimes basil, but often with arugula, which is amazing!) and dice up a few tomatoes. My husband will make fresh bread (or we’ll pick some up from a local baker) and we’ll slice it up and slather it with pesto, top it with tomatoes or dip it in garlic oil with cracked pepper. Everything is so lovely and fresh and it makes dinnertime feel like an event. Paired with a glass of wine, an entertaining drama on my tv, and a cat curled by my side, this is my favorite way to spend a summer evening with my husband!

    (When I saw those cheese boards in this morning’s post, I literally gasped. They’re exactly what I’ve been looking for as a wedding gift for my best friend. If I don’t win one, I’ll be getting one just for her. Heck, if I win this one, maybe I’ll just keep it for myself and STILL get one for her!)

    My favourite meal is one that I’ve been making since I learned to run a frying pan: cheddar cheese perogies, fried slices of garlic sausage, and plenty of sour cream. Since I live in a city with lots of Ukrainian descendants, it’s also common to see perogies at wedding buffets, which is pretty much the best thing ever.

    Birthday dinner.  When whoever’s birthday it is picks what they want most for dinner and birthday dessert.  And then the meal is planned so that all the guests have a yummy experience.  One boy always picks lasagna and cucumber salad, my other son always wants something grilled and root beer freezes for dessert.  I love most making and serving a meal where people are happily and enthusiastically eating, plus lots of laughing and sitting around talking.  (Plus it’s fun to see what’s someone’s favorite meal.) Wine for the grownups, big bottles of sparkling Italian soda for kids and teenagers.  I can remember the menu for each birthday meal I’ve made for my family and when we’ve hosted friends’ or grandparents’ birthday dinners too!

    My favorite meal is any meal that I get to enjoy in the fall! Warm fresh baked pumpkin bread for breakfast, delicious fall salads with crisp apples and delicious bleu cheese, soups and stews filled with rich heart vegetables and left to simmer all day long, fresh crackling baguettes fresh from the oven, warm apple cider with a dash of cinnamon and LOTS of home made macaroni and cheese. ahhhh, I can’t wait for fall meals!

    So, on our second anniversary, my husband went to this new joint in town and had the most amazing cheese, meat, and fruit platter. It was A. MA. ZING. Just picture: several varieties of criminelli sausage thinly sliced. Smoked cheddar. Fresh strawberries. Fig jam. Super stinky locally made bleu cheese. A creamy brie. It may not sound like a meal, but I honestly could have eaten mounds of it until I burst. I have to say, a recreation would look pretty stellar on your cutting boards….

    Recently my daughter filled out a questionnaire about me for Mother’s Day at her school.  Not only am I 13 in her eyes, my favorite food is “smoothies” and my favorite drink is “lemon water.”  In actuality, I’m 31 and I love pinot noir and gorgonzola.  (I do have a smoothie every morning though!)  I guess, in truth, I could never say I have a favorite meal, but I eat at different times of the day for different reasons. I eat in the morning to love my body and to help myself love the day.  I eat at night to love the people I am with.  So…yes to smoothies….yes to pesto pasta I’ve made out of my own garden….yes…to all of it!

    Swiss Steak with rice, sweet creamy corn or green beans and blue berry muffins. My mother made that meal for my birthday every year until I moved away. I can’t do it justice when I make it……but it is my hands-down favorite.
