The last person I wrote a letter to was my best friend, Jenna. She lives on the west coast & I on the east & I miss her terribly, but pen-palling is a great way to stay in touch! I wrote her to thank her for my birthday gift & wish her a happy birthday in return. 🙂

I write letters to my friends and family often, even if they live in the same town as I do, because I feel like with all of the junk mail and e-mail and text messages we get these days, it’s hard to find something truly personal in all of our ways of communication.

I recently wrote a letter to my 4 nieces for them to open when they’re older (they’re all under 3 years old). I wanted to impart some “words of wisdom” to them that I’ve learned in life thus far.

I wrote a letter yesterday to my favorite barista at Starbucks. She told me she was changing jobs and I wanted to make sure she knew what kind of impact she always had on my day and that I’m certain she will have on those around her at her new job!

I write to my brother, he is overseas in Afghanistan right now with the Army. My Mom has been writing good letters, and I’m a little behind, but I’m going to start sending some letters as well. I try to send things more than a letter, I want to make a Christmas tree poster for him to hang up….or maybe they already have trees there? Who knows!

my auntie dorothy… she lived in vancouver but i live in texas so we rarely saw each other.  she was such an amazing woman who showed me what it was like to truly see Jesus as your best friend.  she was suddenly diagnosed with breast cancer so i wrote her a letter telling her how much i learned from her.  now she’s home with Jesus.

I wrote a letter to my aunt and uncle during my lunch break today because I learnt from the grapevine that they felt sad that I did not send them birthday cards. I felt a bit bad that they felt left out of my birthday card sending round, which previously only included my parents, grandparents and sister. But hey, there is always more space in my calendar to include other peeps’ birthdays!

And so yes, I wrote a letter in lieu of birthday cards as their birthdays have already gone by this year.

I sent one of my best friends from home a post card last month. Having moved to different countries, it’s been tough keeping in touch and maintaining friendships (especially when you factor in the time differences, careers, family, etc). This inspired me to start sending old friends post cards, that reflect where I am in life now, hoping to rekindle friendships.

I wrote two letters last month – one to my mom and one to my dad – for Sweetest Day. My family is big on letters, even for made-up holidays. Cards and letters are more cherished than gifts, and I kept every one I’ve received. I still have letters my grandma sent me when I was 5!

    Lindsay says:

I love sending letters/cards. My handwriting is terrible but unmistakable so I also have a certain amount of freedom because 25% of what I write will not be understandable until you’ve read it three times. I last wrote a letter to my Mum to let her know how much I love her and to thank her for cooking me so much delicious food!

Last month, I took out my stash of vintage cards (i.e cards and letter paper that had been lying around for too long!), made an announcement on Facebook and on my blog asking if people would like a hand-written letter from me and was so delighted with the response! I’m still going through the list slowly and sending out my old stationery – such a joy to be writing little notes to people I’ve never met! (The offer is open to readers here too – send me an email if you want a hand-written note, with a real stamp, from Goa, India!)

My dad…when he was at the beginning stages of hospice care. He had been diagnosed with cancer and it had spread very quick. I was living out of state and trying to arrange to get back home. I decided that I should write him something that he could read..just in case… It was a letter from the heart unlike anything i have ever written or probably will ever write again….It was a love letter… a father daughter letter..a letter of thanks and appreciation..and how i am who I am today because of his love and support… By the time I got home..he lived another day…My mother said  when he read it..tears ran down his face..the stoic Irishman?? cry?? wow…He asked that my letter go with him…And, so it did….

My friend Taylor, he is in the navy and was in general freaking out about living on a ship and being deployed. Both me and our mutual best friend Kristin wrote him letters to calm him down and let him know we were thinking of him and of course warning him to duck as he entered doorways!!

My autistic cousin in law, because he sends me letters for my daughter and I thought he would like a retun letter (she is 3 so she is not quite writing yet, so I had her dictate the letter to me so it was in her own words)

    Elizabeth says:

The last person I wrote a letter to is an old college friend. The truth is, we weren’t really friends in college – he was way too cool for me. But in 2005, a couple of years after I graduated, I woke up in a bed and breakfast in Oban, Scotland and I was composing something in my mind to him. His spirit, still, sticks with me and I end up waking up composing something to him. Now I’m married, and (frankly), he’s kind of a disaster, but I love him. In a way I can’t explain. I’m always filled with love for him. I, a doctoral student in English, and he in and out of prison on drug-related charges. What can I say? I’ve always been given words for him, and he for me. Our lives can’t work together, but our long-distance conversation always does.
