December is when I start thinking about one of my favorite traditions of the season: setting up my new calendar! For years, I have looked forward to my new calendar and I have even been known to have a few going on at once. I generally have one family calendar kept in the kitchen for everyone to consult, a day planner where I generally keep my life, and a pretty calendar that makes me feel as though my life is one of luxury and ease. All have their function. All have their form.

From custom invitations to stunning cards, Lissenden is a true artist whose works speaks of depth and heart and beauty. But let’s get to the calendar, shall we? Mink Letterpress’ 2015 Quilt Calendar is at the top of my list for my new decorative calendar. Each gorgeously designed month becomes a piece of the “quilt” you can later frame and hang (either all together or separate, you choose.) December is a joyous month, indeed.     I don’t prepare for the New Year. I wish I could say I try to finish everything from the current year so I can start fresh next year, but that never happens. By the time that week between Christmas and New Year rolls around, I’m so tired that all I want to do is rest and relax.

    i try to tidy up my surroundings and get my paperwork in order. emphasis on the word try. 😉

    I always think I should prepare for the new year by clearing out some of the unnecessary stuff saved up throughout the year in my office area, but I never actually do it until like February.

    I also usually “prepare” myself to start a diet in January by eating extra of all the stuff I will deny myself come the first, then a couple days into the new year I give up on the diet and those “preparations” were all for naught!

    OMG I looooove Letterpress! Beautiful calendars!! 

    OK, so New Year’s is such a  double-edged sword because I always feel funny “doing something” because I’m supposed to be “doing something.” Then again, you don’t want let a new year catch you unprepared!

    I’m the most at ease welcoming a new year by letting go of stress; gathering at the home of someone close to me with a small group of friends; and sending it all off with wine, good food, fireplace, s’mores and music. It’s so intimate and so meaningful–which is what the end and beginning of something so big really should  be.

    I really do just let it all happen. I don’t see any point in having a resolution each year when life is such a great balancing act and I’m always trying to improve!

    I sort of treat it like any other day of the year. Winter just doesn’t feel like the time of year for resolutions and renewal to me. I save that kind of stuff for the spring. 🙂

    I usually spend a little time reflecting on the successes and failures of the past year and make plans accordingly. I set two or three small goals for myself: meet new people, get involved with one charity, give myself a break from performance anxiety at least once. With that in mind, I let whatever comes come.

    I also try not to get food poisoning from New Years’ Eve parties, which was the first resolution I broke this year.

    I try to pay all my bills before the beginning of the New Year.  It makes me feel like I am starting fresh.

    I can’t really say I ‘prepare’ for the New Year.  I try to set goals or improve on things throughout the year instead of telling myself I can only set goals at the beginning of the year. 

    I do have some traditions with my husband: I made a memory jar and we scribble things down on little pieces of paper over the year.  At the end of the year/new years day, we open the jar and read all of our memories.  Then the jar is empty and ready to fill with new memories! I also like to have a traditional New Years meal 🙂  We love food around here, so any reason to celebrate is a good one!

    i don’t really “prepare” for the new year; it’s really just like any other day if you think about it, other than it being a public holiday and well, a new calendar year. normally i try to set some goals and things that i am trusting God for in the new year but that tends to happen after the new year has begun, not before.

    i think the better part of “preparing” for the new year is on new year’s eve when we look back on the year that has past: as a family i like to just count my blessings and also remember the problems we have had but more importantly see how God has brought us through these problems. hurts and grief fade into memories we can smile about or look back at fondly.

    just wanted to share how we spent our new year’s eve last year: i was preparing for my study abroad programme in santa cruz (during winter quarter) and my whole family had come with me to the usa (we’re from singapore) for a few weeks of travelling before hand. we spent new year’s eve walking across the golden gate bridge during sunset, and as we walked we just gave short prayers under our breaths. for me it was all very exciting because i was embarking on my one quarter in the states, yet it was very different being only with my family and no one else, no classmates or friends (disclaimer: i do love my family very much and am super close to them!), and after that we went for dinner and chilled in our hotel room, talking with each other about 2013 and what we looked forward to in 2014. it was just a lovely, quiet way to ring in the new year, and one of the best ways we’ve “prepared”. i’d love to do it again, and it doesn’t have to be outside of singapore this time 🙂

    There really isn’t too much preparation for the New Year for me. I usually day dream and “what if” for a while but in the end, it goes how it goes.

    I prepare for the new year by making a list of what I want to accomplish including professional, creative, bucket-list, personal and health goals. I spend as much time as I can with family and friends during the holidays because life is short and time with loved ones is a top priority. Then I see where the new year takes me!

    I enter birthdays in my day planner and start a new journal (even if I’m not done with the one prior). I love to start anew and filling in those blank pages brings me great joy. I tell myself that every day is a new adventure and a new year is positively bursting with possibility!

    Woah.  These calendars are outrageously beautiful.  My mother, a quilter and bookmaker, would freak out if she saw this.  FREAK out.

    I find this question hard to answer because there are so many “new years” that happen all the time! There’s the calendar new year, the school new year (I’m a teacher), the financial new year, cultural new years that I celebrate (Chinese New Year and spring festival), and religious new years’ celebrations like Rosh Hashanah in the fall. (The start of the Christian calendar JUST happened this week, as a matter of fact.)  In short, I feel like there’s ALWAYS a “new year” happening.  With all that in mind, I guess what I do is…celebrate.  I think life and death are ALWAYS changing hands, so I try to I witness what has come and what is coming.  What I have done and failed to do.  And I try to make it a part of every passing day – not just Jan. 1.  I think, for me, the idea of the New Year (any new year!) is to remember with thankfulness, to honor with friends and family our sadnesses and struggles, and to together hope and believe in sweetness ahead.  I hope that that is something I practice in my daily life too.  So, I suppose you could say, I get ready by living my life trying to honor newness at every turn.

    New Year’s has changed for me since I became a mom.  Now, I mainly prepare to try to get to bed early.  Just kidding.  (Sort of.)   I know that this is a precious, important time in my life, but it’s just so hard with little kids to look out ahead.  I’m always coping and not really able to “plan.”  I’m not trying to complain – I LOVE being a mom.  

    This question is inspiring me. Before the New Year comes I’m going to set aside some time to write letters to my children in the future – to record some of these special moments that I have now.  I see SO much in them, and I want my beautiful babies to know how much they were loved and seen.  I want them to have a strong sense of who they are and were.  YESSSSSS.  That is what I’m doing.  Thanks for your help!  🙂

    I don’t prepare for the New Year, I like to let it happen. However, I take the time to reflect on the year behind me with all of its ups and downs and appreciate all of the things I’ve accomplished – then I make some new goals, some simple, some quite large. With my pajamas on, I ring in the new year, toast to a new year with some champagne, and fall asleep with nothing but wishes and goals for a prosperous New Year.

    I prepare for the new year by cleaning my house so that I have a nice place to snuggle into that evening and prepare for a champagne toast with my husband. We also love to go out to a nice dinner together at a really nice little restaurant in our neighborhood and reflect back on the last year and discuss our plans for the upcoming one!

    I always get the itch to take on big projects and clean All The Things once January rolls around. I think it’s because I’m still on a high from Christmas prep and need something else to focus my attention on. I usually end up petering out about halfway through things because I’ve just expended SO much energy on the holidays. This year I plan to intentionally take it easy in January and see what motivates and moves me instead. A little mental break from all of the rush-rush seems appropriate.

    We are in a constant battle against mess in my house, and we are just two adults (allegedly…) with no kids or pets….oops. So I try to start the new year by getting the place clean, purging some of our stuff we haven’t used in forever, and hanging up more art!

    I adore the quilt calendar! It reminded me of these last few notecards I have with photos of quilts that I’ve been hoarding for something like ten years. Every time I write a thank you note I think of using them, but I just can’t part with the pretty pictures. I think this year I’ll share the wealth and send a quilt card to someone who will appreciate it! 🙂

    About the new year, I usually try to prepare in my own way by not making the last two weeks of December a no-holds-barred sugar fest. I still eat a lot of chocolate and sweets, but try to remember that the less I go overboard the easier it will be to keep my health resolutions after January 1st. We’ll see how I do this time. 🙂

    I also prepare by planning a New Year’s Eve dinner party for a small group of friends so I can save us all from the stress of finding something to do in NY, since it can be really overpriced. It’s a great way to start the new year: with less stress and a room full of food and love!

    Every year I write my new Year’s resolutions in my journal and throughout the year I note how I’m doing on them. Each December, I reevaluate the year and come up with new resolutions. I am NEVER this organized in my life, but for some reason, I’m all about my resolutions!
