Giveaway :: Peripeti, home

Tuesday, April 2, 2013

{shop :: Facebook}

I get asked all the time what Peripeti means, it refers to the point in a story where a seemingly insignificant act or moment changes the course of the rest of the story. I love that concept and believe that so often what happens in moments which feel mundane can actually be moments of great significance.

Honestly, friends, there is no better way to honor the beginning of our month long focus on the flourish than by introducing you to Peripeti, home. That explanation above is the marrow of it. This is the time of year to literally stop and smell the roses, after all. We want to celebrate this pause, this breath, with the significance it deserves. The tiny moments in our lives that can feel ordinary are sometimes the very things we hold onto most when we think about the happiest times. When we think about our happy space, so often a particular enviroment comes to mind. More often than not, this comes down to ambience.

Kate Walsh of Peripeti, home creates gorgeous, eco-friendly soy candles. These are the type of candles you buy as a gift and end up keeping for yourself. (Not that I know anything about that.) Peripeti, home is the line you find yourself going back to over and over again. From repurposed coffee mugs and vintage tea cup candles to the Ugly Mug, Walsh takes the ordinary and makes it, well, extraordinary. Flourish, indeed.

Peripeti, home is giving away one gift set of 4 tins in Peripeti, home Signature Fragrances to one lucky winner! They are each 4 ounces and will burn for 30-40 hours and come in a cute canvas bag. I ADORE the smell of campfire. To me it brings back memories of family trips and fall and sitting around and talking for hours. I am big on olfactory memory stimulation (I once spent all of my study sessions for exams periodically sniffing a perfume sample, and then wore the perfume to the finals!), and campfires are what I have the strongest memory association with! I’d love to find a candle that really captures it! These candles sound amazing, I love how many non-flowery scents there are!

    I love the smell of lavender. My grandmother always kept lavender hand soaps and lotions at her house and it reminds me of her. Also, when I was very young I traveled with my parents and older sister to France, and in the hotel all of the soaps were French lavender scented and I loved it. When I went to Spain for a study abroad program, I visited a monastery in Salamanca that was built with a central courtyard filled with lavender plants growing around a central gazebo; it was truly unforgettable, just closing my eyes and smelling the flowers. I associate the scent with so many great memories, and take every opportunity to enjoy it in everything from soaps and lotions to lavender tea.

    I live a few miles away from an inlet and if the wind is blowing just right or if it has just rained you can often smell the ocean. Some of my best memories involve that smell and it has to be my favorite.

    My favorite smell is citrus blossom, orange or lemon it doesn’t matter.  It smells so clean and fresh, and STRONG, of sweetness.  I love smells and having my clothes and linens and house (and body) smell good is more important than painting the walls or dusting the furniture or even shaving my legs.

    My father grew up on a cattle ranch in central Montana, and every time we visited my grandparents, the smell of their entryway hit me with sweet nostalgia. The room was where all the men took off their boots after working in the fields and it smelled of leather, earth, sweat, old spice, and soap. So powerful and so real, so connected to summers running amok in the vast expanses of land, so connected to my stout, powerful grandfather who was filled with crazy old cowboy stories, so connected to the smells of my grandmother’s cooking coming in pink-cheeked in the late evening. My grandparents sold the ranch several years ago, and I miss the smell almost as much as I miss anything I’ve ever lost. When I walk into my grandparent’s house now, I stoop down low to smell my grandpa’s cowboy boots for a faint hint of that smell that means coming home.

    The smell I never thought I’d get to smell; but then I did…. The smell that took months and months to make, and hours and hours to birth….

    The smell of my newborn daughter as she was placed on my chest. Dry as a bone, skin even peeling…. So she was definitely “sniff-able”. Warm, new, beautiful love.

    My favorite scent is honeysuckle! Every time I smell it, it reminds me of hanging out at my old elementary school when I was little (my family would walk our dog around the campus and there were lots of bushes that had honeysuckle flowers growing).

    My favorite smell is freshly ground coffee. I don’t even drink caffeinated coffee so it’s not a “need”-type of smell. I didn’t grow up around coffee either. But the smell will stop me right in my tracks in the coffee aisle at the grocery store!
