Summer means finally letting the colors run free. It is the time to shake off any inhibitions we have about vibrant and bold and let the muted palettes take a break. Now it’s up to you where you want this color to reign. Personally, I find myself drawn to colorful art in the warmer months. Maybe it’s something about bringing the sunshine indoors, long after the sun sets for the evening. I have been known to swap out my “winter art” for “summer art.” (And, no, there is no set standard for classification. It’s just a feeling.) Here comes the sun(shine) is a way of living, don’t you see? It’s a way of harnessing all that this season has to offer and sprinkling it all around.

Jaymee Srp creates original artwork, textiles and home goods with vintage inspiration under the umbrella Retro Menagerie. Srp’s simple, modern designs bring  the perfect pop of color to any space that needs it.  The Orange and Yellow Sunburst and the Aqua Ombre Mountain Range  are particularly reminiscent of the perfect summertime sunset, don’t you think? I find myself thinking this set should be right inside my front door, so that I always remember that the sunshine is a living, breathing thing; a constant. Come to think of it, Retro Menagerie is chock full of constant inspiration, don’t you think?

    As soon as I catch myself feeling sour, I stop, breathe & stretch. Taking a few seconds (or sometimes a couple of minutes) to center myself snaps me back into the sunshine spirit.

    Watching a half of the Phantom of the Opera 25th anniversary…it has my two favorite singers, Ramin Karimloo (as the Phantom) and Hadley Fraser (as Raoul). They have such beautiful voices…

    I whirl around the house with a duster, spinning dust like a dervish. I swipe counters, clear dustbins, put away errant toys. Plants get a dose of water, mirrors get a wipe and before you know it, I’ve calmed down and feeling more in control. Bonus? The house/room sparkles and is more liveable. Maybe I should use those dark days a little more…

    It’s hard to be in a bad mood when you’re listening to vintage 80s music, like old school Madonna and Cyndi Lauper. Works every time!

    Turning on some cheesy pop music loud and dancing with my daughter. She loves to dance and watching her serious face while she tries to choreograph a routine is hilarious. I’m usually just used as a support beam or spotter but I still manage to get some jazz hands and hip shakes in before she casts me off “stage”.

    I’m usually in a bad mood because I’m tired…so I take a 20 minute nap and then, once I feel refreshed from that, I go on a run to get all the frustration out.  If I don’t have time for that, ice cream works, too.

    When I am in a bad mood, it always helps to call a funny friend and have a good laugh. That usually does the trick! : )

    I think about how my bad mood isn’t real, it’s just hormones, and I try and rationalise with myself to keep my temper in check. It doesn’t always work but I’m very good at being honest and saying sorry if I do get cranky!

    When I catch myself dwelling on negative thoughts I remind myself to be kind and focus on the good: in myself, in others, in every situation. Being active, being outside, being with loved ones, spending time doing the things I love… these are things that also help me to snap out of it.

    Honestly, all I have to do is watch the news and know that my family is healthy, my son is safe and that we have a house over our head. This is what pulls me out of my funk! Everything feels like small stuff when I remind myself about how lucky we are!

    As someone who has suffered from clinical depression for years, I have found the best way to lift my mood is GET UP, GET OUT, AND GET MOVING. I have to make myself sometimes, but it always helps. It doesn’t matter if i just get out to go the store, library, or take a drive it helps.

    JUst have to look at my one year olds cute little face, does the trick every time.  My heart begins to melt on the spot and I realize that the little things just don’t matter that much:)

    I look at a photo of my cat.  Super cheesy, but she looks so cute that I just melt into a pool of cat loving goo and you just can’t be in a bad mood in that state.

    A good run.  It empties my mind of all the extraneous thoughts and worries throughout the day and gives me the space to meditate on what actually matters in this life.
