Sometimes the journey is really the lesson. So often, I find myself wishing for an adventure, a vacation, a journey. I don’t dream of this merely because I need an escape, but more because I find that travel of any kind (even traveling around your own city) teaches us something. Whether we need the free time to decompress from a stressful day to day life or we want to get ourselves out of our comfort zones and head into the great unknown, the journey is usually the answer. You’ll forgive the philosophical rant when you learn more about today’s contributor.
Liz Forkin Bohannon took a journey to Uganda after graduating college. Her intention was to help a youth organization, utilizing her journalism and communications backgrounds. But, as well all know with most journeys, our intentions merely get us on the road. Sometimes the journey has other plans. For Bohannon, her journey culminated in Sseko Designs, a brand employing Ugandan women so that they can earn money to pay for higher education. Sseko Designs provides these women with “An opportunity to work. An opportunity to succeed and earn and save. To work in a place that was dignified and honoring. To work in an environment and with people who see beyond the now and have a vision for what they will become.” From unique and beautiful sandals to hobo bags and scarves, each handcrafted piece is simply stunning. It’s all about the journey. Indeed.
