{shop :: website}

I don’t know about you, but my go to bag lately has been a large tote of sorts designed to hold as many things as possible at one time. My life just plain does not fit into a handbag anymore. My problem, however, is that I don’t want to forsake style for function. Sure, I have needs but I also have wants. Don’t we all? Luckily, here at the BSP, we have a few wonderful makers up our sleeve when we need something specific and today is no exception.

Emily Yurkevicz of thread & paper creates impeccably designed tote bags that marry form and function in a way that makes my heart sing. Yurkevicz believes in good design and her belief that it can be attainable and accessible for everyone sets her apart from the pack. The Color Block totes are a particular favorite (it is bad to want one of every color?) but my heart really stopped when I saw the Leather Tote. Perfection. thread & paper is the new standard, friends.

thread & paper is giving away one Color Block Tote (in choice of color) to one lucky winner! To enter to win, please answer the following question no later than Wednesday, July 2nd.
Please visit thread & paper and tell us: What is in your purse right this very moment?
Start checking the winner’s box on Tuesday, July 8th, to see if you’ve won!

My purse says everything about me!  I like to be ready to be totally alive in the world, and to remember who I am and the people I love.  Currently in my purse there are: three books (you never know when you need to be inspired!), an apple and green beans (I always need to eat!!), a journal and pen (to record this world I love!), a small first aid kit, a pair of headphones, a seashell from my grandma’s house in Maine (I love my people!), a special agate from my hometown in Montana (I’m a home-girl!), and – you know – my wallet (which is shaped like an owl.) Also….some sand from trips to the beach.  🙂

the basics would be my phone, wallet, an umbrella, a pen and tissue paper. i’ve started carrying a pair of sunglasses because it’s been really sunny these days, and along with the arrival of the heatwave here i’ve started taking a small paper fan along to cool down; it looks much classier than fanning myself with random pamphlets i get. more importantly i’ve started carrying a small tin of blank note cards with me where ever i go, so that i can always write a small note of encouragement or appreciation to the friends i meet. consciously reminding myself to be more thankful of others/be a blessing to others has also given me more joy 🙂

The only things of inteterest in my purse are 4 different lipsticks (I’m eternally searching for the perfect shade) and a blank check from my boss. He gave it to me two years ago when I was buying my house, in case something came up last minute. I can’t bring myself to throw it away…

Sometimes I leave home in the early morning and don’t return until late. It’s taught me to pack for how I’d like my day to play out. If I wear sneakers, I’ll pack sandals and a shade of Urban Decay lipstick called something like “Shame.” I need something frivolous to read on the train (BUST) and something engrossing for when I get a break (Lorrie Moore just now). A small notebook and pen. My denim jacket with the sleeves permanently rolled up and round sunglasses. Almonds, to share, and an apple. Phone. Debit. ID. Starburst.

What beautiful purses! Yes, I find the bigger the purse, the more I find to fit in it! Right now I have a smaller purse, so I’ve squeezed in sunglasses, eyeglasses, lip gloss, wallet, pocket calendar, THREE little packets of kleenex (how did that happen?!?), wet wipes, pens, bandaid holder, toothpick holder, orange tic tacs, a lollipop, medicine, ponytail holder, cough drops, motion sickness pills (I once threw up in my purse!), gum, and extra keys.  Bonus temporary items: AMC theater receipts from two movies this week, a Pavillions grocery receipt, bluetooth headset, Powell & Peralta skateboard shop receipt(bonus suprise for my husband), Ralphs coupons, tickets for my son’s dance recital, CVS coupons, dr.’s past visit summary, PF Chang’s receipt, empty container of mini oreos, and orange LEGO remover (!?!). Apparently I really needed to clean out my purse, so thanks for getting me going!!

    Pumpernickel says:

I don’t carry a purse but I need to! I carry a wallet in my back pocket and everything else either stays home or stays in the car (diapers, extra clothes for the babies). Maybe if I carried a purse I wouldn’t wear jeans every day just to accommodate my wallet. 🙂

Oh, ya know…the usual…keys, wallet, diaper clutch, 1 green metallic hot wheels, 10 diapers (not for me), a secret stash of bribery gum and orange tic tacs (don’t judge me), chapstick (with bite marks in it…also not me…although it is THAT delicious), an extra pair of socks, a pair of baby converse shoes, a baggie of snacks (also not for me, although I could use some teddy grahams right now….), 3 pens, 3 notebooks with the beginnings of letters, birthday party plans, and grocery lists (my son wrote PRETEND BOOBE TRAPSS on my grocery list), and a couple of bobby pins. The usual.

On a side note, I grew up on Boston’s south shore and I love the northeast too. Desperately. I would give my eye tooth to be back there, in the fall, in a B&B in Vermont. Home there is most beautiful place on earth.

As a little girl I thought that a woman’s purse was as magical as Mary Poppins’ bag because of the fantastic stuff that could be drawn out of it at any time!  Now as a grown woman, and a mother, I know how they have to function as a “home-kit” all day for whatever might arise–and a little something magical/beautiful is still appreciated!  My current bag right now feels incredibly light but has an amazing amount of stuff in it: floating loose in the main area is a pen, my sunglasses in a sleeve, my wallet (which is actually made out of pretty fabric, a first for me, I usually go for colorful leather ones) with assorted cards, money, the regular stuff (but here the magic is a folded up $20 tucked away in honor of my grandmother who believed that a woman should always carry a little something for emergencies like running out of gas or coming across a farmstand with glorious red tomatoes); in a little interior pocket I have lip balm and my phone; the larger interior pocket has a bottle of papaya enzymes, a pack of berrymint gum, a key to my parents’ house & a key to the clothing boutique I work at on a weird oversized paperclip (we don’t have a house key because our house doesn’t have any locks, and no car keys because we leave them in our cars–that’s what it’s like when you live on a farm in a valley of less than 20,000 people), a blue handkerchief from my grandfather, a little container of q-tips (that I swear are like a basic McGyver tool for women), a zippered “beauty” pouch (gorgeous–red leather heart on the outside, purple velvet lined) with a tube of lip gloss, a vial of plumeria perfume, eyeliner, mini mascara container, tiny bottle of hair serum, and I also have another zippered “emergencies” pouch (again with a red leather heart, but this one has a yellow zipper) with a couple of bobby pins, some mini bands for tiny braids, four ponytail holders (because hair emergencies are the most vital kind), a tampon, a thin feminine pad, a heart shaped tin of aspirin (good for mashing onto bee stings and wasp bites, not just headaches), two individual vials of eyedrops, and a couple of plastic toothpicks for flossing.

My purse usually has the basics but also a few fun things it.  I always have a sketchbook and various pens.  I never know when I’ll come across a beautiful building, park, person or animal that will inspire me to draw.  I also keep a few snacks with me, and lip balm, deodorant, hand cream, my wallet, and my phone.

My wallet is chock full of love notes, happy Chinese fortunes, artist’s busines cards and trinkets that I find on the street.  I charge it with love and light everyday and love to empty it out, read all of my little notes and put everything back again (coincidentally, my favorite scene in Amelie… where Amandine has this same happy tradition).
In addition:  keys, cell phone, sunglasses, a variety of lipsticks and a secret pocket for tampons!

    Kate B says:

I consider my purse the small wristlet that I carry most often. I adopted this system several years ago and adore being able to grab just the wristlet and dash out the door without being weighed down by a lot of stuff. It contains my wallet, keys and phone (well, my phone is next to me right now, but is in my purse when I leave the house), as well as two tubes of lip balm, for some reason. I specially chose this wristlet with a clip on one end of the strap so I could clip it around the handles of a larger bag and access it quickly if I need to. It’s actually dirty and a bit beaten up, and I upgraded to a larger wallet that barely fits in it, so I should really find my next one (I will never abandon this system!), but I am in no hurry!

(PS, THANK YOU for making a tote bag that zips across the top! It’s one of my requirements for a larger bag, because I’m often walking in crowded areas and the idea of hands dipping in my bag and slipping my posessions out makes me totally paranoid! When I replaced my tote bag 5 years ago, it took me forever to find one with enough body and a zipped top!)
