{shop :: Pillow Shop :: Facebook}

Do you want to know one of my favorite ways to spend a hot summer afternoon when I have nowhere I have to be? Inside an air conditioned room, on a comfortable couch with pillows, reading a good book. Not quite the outdoorsy answer one was hoping for? Well, it’s all about balance, friends. As much as I enjoy basking in the sunshine, I also enjoy watching it stream through the windows and fill my room with light. This might help explain my love affair with textiles, however. Surrounding oneself with beautifully crafted textiles is one way to ensure a good afternoon.

Carol Gilbert of yorktown road creates vibrant and gorgeous linen bags and pillows that are simply stunning in their craftsmanship and design. Gilbert’s hand-dyed linens are formed with great care and attention to form, with the fabric dictating the design. yorktown road bags are one of a kind pieces that bring a subtle simplicity to the table. I would be remiss if I didn’t send you over to yorktown road pillowshop as well, especially considering the perfect marriage of a free summer afternoon and a great textile. happy summer, yorktown road.

My favorite way to spend a summer afternoon with no obligations is to go on a couple hour bike ride. With friends if I can rustle them up last minute, or by myself.

No obligations on a summer afternoon? What am I NOT going to do?! My beach chair, a good book, sunblock, and some sand call to me whenever I have free time in the summer. So much, in fact, that my beach chair has a permanent home in the trunk of my car – year round.

It has been so long since I have had an afternoon alone! Two very attached little ones…it has literally been 4 years. I might SAY that I would go see a movie or to a museum in peace but in reality I would probably do something boring like shopping for underwear or deep cleaning the house without my little “helpers”.

Just checked out Yorktown Road’s Etsy page and love the vibrant colors of their bags – those lax tote bags look pretty amazing. A lazy summer afternoon – love hanging with friends, firing up the grill, kicking back a few mules, and eating homemade ice cream 🙂

I have to agree with the a/c. I am not a fan of sweating.
Perfect summer afternoon with no obligation – in the air conditioning, sitting in front of the TV with some sort of Netflix marathon, embroidering something fun. Preferably with a dog or cat next to me. But mostly a/c.

My favorite way to spend a summer afternoon is with a good book, lounging by the pool with a cold drink. Alternate reading & sunbathing with swimming and napping. My idea of perfect.

I grab my parasol, a blanket, a book and a bestie before heading to the beach.  Nothing is as spiritually cleansing as the ocean!  Then, a late night beach bonfire before retiring to the beach house and falling asleep to the sound of the waves.  Bliss!

Having recently relocated from an area where beach days were possible to desert farmland, my dreams of lying on the beach reading are no more. But a great substitute is to find a shady spot by the creek or head to the aquarium, and then get together with friends for ice cream.

Let me see…it would start by going to a local coffee shop for delicious gourmet coffee, then finding a beach (we’re new to the area).  This would be my daughter’s first time at the beach, so it would be exciting and interesting to see her reaction 🙂 An afternoon nap sounds amazing, followed by a movie in the park!

My favorite way to spend a summer afternoon, free of worries, is at the beach.  There I can soak in some sun, because who can do that when you’re stuck in an office? I would also love to be with the salt water, swaying and jumping with the waves.

I would definitely spend the afternoon on a quiet stretch of the Lake Michigan shoreline. The sound and sight of the water is at once soothing and energizing, and I thoroughly enjoy the hunt for interesting fossils, rocks, or sea glass. The waves, the sky, and the light are always changing as well. I never fail to leave inspired after even just an hour here; an uninterrupted afternoon would be divine!

Swimming in the pool with friends, I love everybody having a good time.  The best part is when the afternoon bleeds into evening and an impromptu BBQ or pizza dinner follows, with more swimming at dusk.  The most perfect summer afternoon would finish off with the swim friends staying until dark and sitting around the fire pit talking, laughing, roasting marshmallows.  I love summer!

I would create the perfect summer day for my kids. We’d hit up the farmer’s market for some fresh berries and laden-with-fuzz, fresh-from-the-orchard peaches and eat them, juice dripping down our elbows, on a quilt under a huge, shady oak tree while intermittently reading and playing tag. Then we’d hit up the beach with some family friends and we’d bury my husband in the sand and make it look like he is a mermaid. He would totally be up for that, shells and all, of course. We’d stay until evening, bring out the sweatshirts for the cool of the evening, and then roast kebabs and make smores over a roaring bonfire. Top it off with some firefly chasing and then collapsing into bed, exhausted, sun-kissed, and together.

i live in singapore so you could say that it’s almost always summer here! although our lifestyles are every hectic and we’re always rushing about 🙁

if i had no obligations, i’d grab my bestie and we’d be tourists for a day in our own homeland! we’ve always been telling each other that “let’s go visit this place” or “let’s go walk there when we’re free” but we’ve both been so busy doing our own thing (like working) that we’ve never gotten around to doing any of it haha. my bestie just sent me a whole list of cafes to visit in a certain really cool heritage area of our little island, and i’m just waiting for my summer job to end so we can be hipsters for a day and just walk around and soak in the sights and sounds! it’s a singaporean thing to say that there isn’t much to see in singapore, but honestly i really love my country because even though it’s so ridiculously tiny, there’s still so much quirky and cool stuff happening here 🙂 but now it’s really time for me to go see these cool stuff for myself haha!

On our boat with my family watching them waterski and tube, having a leisurely lunch and floating while we all read our books. We bought our boat when I was first diagnosed with cancer 7 yrs ago we decided not to put off doing things we really wanted to do as you never know what can can happen. We have had countless wonderful days boating with our daughters and we often talk of how much we love our boat. It is a break from the reality of ongoing treatment and always makes me feel better.

Sandy shoes and salty hair, as I pull a wagon of beach toys back to a house where shrimp is boiling, beer is chilling and an outdoor shower awaits. After I put aloe on my sun kissed shoulders, I join my friends on the porch. No make-up. Just wet hair and warm smiles for an evening of games and laughter and later summer skies.

    Elizabeth says:

If I had no obligations, the main thing I would do is try to listen to myself deeply to see what I wanted to do, not in my head, but in my whole being.  Maybe that sounds hokey.  But to be honest, I’ve found that sometimes I have these ideas about what I SHOULD do to relax when I have time – swimming or seeing a movie or laying around or reading or sun bathing or WHATEVER – and anytime that I do something because it SHOULD be relaxing…it fails. So!!!  I’ve been working really hard when I have that odd hour to just let myself do normal things until an idea comes to me organically.  And I just happen to be able to have the freedom to do it – so I DO!  And THAT is what I love to do!  I love to be able to listen to my deepest desires during that time and answer them – sometimes it’s something nerdy like grocery shopping, which should be work – but it ends up being a beautiful, serene experience for me.

I live in a small town on the Ohio River and when I have an afternoon to myself I love to walk through downtown, maybe visit a couple local shops, and then take a leisurely stroll on the pedestrian walkway by the water.

I love to sit on my screened in porch reading the newspaper and doing the crossword. There is something really tranquil to me about sitting and reading and then I get to zone out and focus in on the crossword creating my own world of random facts and intelligence. Yeah I’ll only get a handful of answers to the crossword and it’ll take me four hours to do so but its the experience I’m looking for.

On an open summer afternoon, I love to go visit and play with my niece.  Just watching her learn new things and seeing the ways in which she explores her environment with wonder really puts things into perspective for me.  It reminds me to sometimes look at the world through a child’s eyes and to always find the opportunity to discover a new adventure.

I love to spend time at my in laws’ lake house in the summer. The ideal afternoon would include reading something lovely on the deck and then going for a swim off their dock. Afterwards, I’d towel off and help my husband cook something for dinner to share with the whole family (our specialty is empanadas) and drink a glass of wine.
