Hello, dear readers. Inherent in the mission statement of The Bright Side Project is the unspoken belief that to “Do What You Love, Love What You Do” is an absolutely essential component in creating a happy and healthy lifestyle. Every now and then, we will ask our contributors to answer a few short questions on the ideas of happiness, creativity and sunshine. We hope these rays of light help inspire you to find the sunshine in your day, today and everyday.
Today we are honored to introduce you to Amanda from Amanda Thon Metalsmith.
Please introduce yourself to our readers and explain a little bit about your business.
>Howdy! My name in Amanda Thon and I am the sole owner of Amanda Thon Metalsmith. I make jewelry using ancient (metal, stone, fire) and modern technologies (handmixed resins, a toaster oven). I have a degree in Fine Arts from Florida State University but my real passion lies in making modern heirlooms for folks to enjoy.
I really love making things that are made to be used and hope my creations bring folks a sense of joy. I think that putting on a nice pair of earrings or favorite ring can improve your self esteem. Knowing that the things I make go out into the world to fulfill a role in my customer’s lives is extremely satisfying.
You can find my jewelry for sale at my Etsy shop - http://www.etsy.com/shop/
We believe that one of the ways to achieve happiness is to “Do what you love, love what you do.” How does this philosophy apply to your life?
Even if – like myself- you don’t devote 100% of your working hours to “your passion” due to a day job I advise everyone to find (or rediscover) something you can do for yourself to bring joy to your life. It could be something as simple as a walk in a park with our family at dusk – or learning a new skill!
While my job a a part time librarian pays the bills - my job as a jeweler connects my mind and hands in a way that pays my soul!
Our mission here at The Bright Side Project is to spread sunshine on a daily basis because we firmly believe that life is (still) beautiful. Where do you find beauty and inspiration?
I’m inspired by reading books on jewelry making, crafts, architecture, myths and fairy tales. I’m interested in how things were made in the past and have a penchant for collecting industrial and mid century items as well as books on historical design. I’ll seek out something I need at estate sales or thrift stores instead of buying it new in most cases.
On a dreary day, what do you do to infuse your life with a little bit of sunshine?
I search the newspapers and blogs for good news! I’m convinced that the world needs a “Good News” TV program.
Just as many good things happen as tragic ones - our society just doesn’t condense this particular type of news into one space!
My favorite “Good News” find of late is the Caine’s Arcade video – a short film about a boy in LA who built an entire arcade out of cardboard.
It might seem “silly” but my searches help reassure me that the world is a good place, with people willing to make a difference in it!
At this very moment, what are you most grateful for?
Being healthy and pain free! I’m very glad to be in a fully function body as I recently had a chronic illness resulting in the removal of my appendix!
