Sunshine Post :: Au Retour

Monday, August 27, 2012

Hello, dear readers. Inherent in the mission statement of The Bright Side Project is the unspoken belief that to “Do What You Love, Love What You Do” is an absolutely essential component in creating a happy and healthy lifestyle. Every now and then, we will ask our contributors to answer a few short questions on the ideas of happiness, creativity and sunshine. We hope these rays of light help inspire you to find the sunshine in your day, today and everyday.

Today we are honored to introduce you to Emily from Au Retour.

Please introduce yourself to our readers and explain a little bit about your business.

Hi! I’m Emily and I am the CHIEF at Au Retour, an independent textile design and print studio based out of Brooklyn, NY. I design and print textiles and make them into functional things like pillow covers, tote bags and scarves. I come from a background in painting and printmaking. My thesis work in grad school was basically about design—I was interested in utopian movements and how those ideas were articulated in Art and Architecture. Maybe it rubbed off, but at a certain point, I was interested in making prints and objects that people could use. I still find that I think of my work like I am making a painting–I start every design imagining it as a finished piece.

I have been working on Au Retour for about 2 years, but I just opened an etsy shop about 8 months ago—it has been totally surprising journey that has really exceeded all of my expectations and I feel really amazed and lucky that anyone is interested in what I am making!

We believe that one of the ways to achieve happiness is to “Do what you love, love what you do.” How does this philosophy apply to your life?

I very nearly pursued other things—but in the end, I couldn’t imagine my life with out making things. For me, being an artist and designer is a way of living your life and experiencing things. I feel really lucky that I have had a lot of amazing friends and family and teachers that live this way and are really supportive.

On a dreary day, what do you do to infuse your life with a little bit of sunshine?

Hmmm, when I get bummed out, I like to take a walk or watch a movie or soccer game to take my mind off things! My husband also always cheers me up and brings me a snack!

What are you most grateful for?

Family and friends!

    Definitely my family! When I was younger I use to dream of traveling to far off places and roaming wherever my feet would take me, but as I got older and had kids that changed a bit. I still dream of traveling, but it’s not the only thing this fulfilling anymore. It’s my baby girl’s curious and mischievous smile, my son’s laugh and sense of humor and my boyfriend’s support of everything I daydream of. My family is amazing and I’m truly grateful for them!
