Sunshine Post :: Jennifer Ladd

Hello, dear readers. Inherent in the mission statement of The Bright Side Project is the unspoken belief that to “Do What You Love, Love What You Do” is an absolutely essential component in creating a happy and healthy lifestyle. Every now and then, we will ask our contributors to answer a few short questions on the ideas of happiness, creativity and sunshine. We hope these rays of light help inspire you to find the sunshine in your day, today and everyday.

Today we are honored to introduce you to Jennifer from Jennifer Ladd.

Please introduce yourself to our readers and explain a little bit about your business.

Hi! I’m Jennifer Ladd. I’m a stay-at-home mom by day and a purse designer by night (and sometimes by nap). I live in Milwaukee, WI with my husband and my two daughters (we adopted my 5-year-old daughter from Vietnam and recently came home with my youngest daughter from Ethiopia). I started my business shortly after we came home with my oldest daughter – I needed a bit of a break from Cheerios, crayons, and Sesame Street, and sewing gave me a perfect creative outlet. Nearly five years later, I still love my new life! I love the challenge of creating something cool yet practical every day. I love using bright and bold patterns in my purses and mixing elegance with a bit of whimsy.

We believe that one of the ways to achieve happiness is to “Do what you love, love what you do.” How does this philosophy apply to your life?

I love everything about what I do! I used to be a middle school French teacher, and I really enjoyed that job. It was a big (and quite difficult) decision for me to quit that job and stay home full-time with my daughters. I am SO glad that I did. I love every moment of being their mom. I love spending time with them and teaching them and learning with them. Of course it helps that they are two of the sweetest girls on the planet! And how lucky am I that when they go to bed, I get to do the other job that I love?! Ever since I was a little child, whenever anyone would ask me what my ‘”dream job” would be, I would automatically say that I wanted to run my own business and sell my handmade creations. I never thought it was practical, so I never thought I would ACTUALLY do it. But now I am! And I am enjoying it more than I ever even dreamed I would.

Our mission here at The Bright Side Project is to spread sunshine on a daily basis because we firmly that life is (still) beautiful. Where do you find beauty and inspiration?

I am inspired by beautiful color combinations. My brain just feels happy when I see beautiful colors together.

On a dreary day, what do you do to infuse your life with a little bit of sunshine?

Dreary days are the perfect time for my daughters and I to break out our crafting supplies and spend the day creating. It’s hard to be down when you have fun stickers, colorful paper, and jars of glitter!

What are you most grateful for?

I couldn’t ask for a kinder family, a more supportive husband, or sweeter (or funnier or smarter or cuter!) kids. I am so grateful every day that I have been so lucky to have this amazing family. I am thankful for the love and the laughs that they give me.

    The kindest thing – a man selling flowers on a city street corner watched as I exited a building, reeling from a very difficult meeting. I squared my shoulders and let out a big sigh of relief. Although he was a full block away, he said when I approached him: “You deserve to buy yourself some flowers. You feel so relieved from what you just went through.”
