Sunshine Post :: Jillian Rene Decor

Tuesday, July 3, 2012

Hello, dear readers. Inherent in the mission statement of The Bright Side Project is the unspoken belief that to “Do What You Love, Love What You Do” is an absolutely essential component in creating a happy and healthy lifestyle. Every now and then, we will ask our contributors to answer a few short questions on the ideas of happiness, creativity and sunshine. We hope these rays of light help inspire you to find the sunshine in your day, today and everyday.

Today we are honored to introduce you to Jillian from Jillian Rene Decor.

Please introduce yourself to our readers and explain a little bit about your business.

Virginia Commonwealth University’s School of the Arts, I began to realize that my passion for making was equally as strong as my passion for design. There’s just something incredibly rewarding about coming up with a design and meticulously crafting a finished piece from scratch. While working on a sculpture project, one of my professors asked me if I had heard of Etsy. Thinking it would be a great place for me to sell my work, she suggested I check it out. The rest is history…

We believe that one of the ways to achieve happiness is to “Do what you love, love what you do.” How does this philosophy apply to your life?

I make every effort to live by this H. D. Thoreau quote, “Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined.” Being an interior designer is perfect for me. It gives me the flexibility to work at many scales from macro and micro. One day I might be space planning a room, the next day selecting colors and fabrics, or the next making pillows. Overall, I enjoy working with my hands and my favorite part of any project is seeing the finished product no mater what the scale. The most rewarding part is seeing a client smile because of something beautiful I’ve created.

Our mission here at The Bright Side Project is to spread sunshine on a daily basis because we firmly that life is (still) beautiful. Where do you find beauty and inspiration?

I find a lot of my inspiration in nature. From the vivid colors to the organic geometry, I find the intricate details to be incredibly beautiful.

On a dreary day, what do you do to infuse your life with a little bit of sunshine?

I always wear bright colors on a dreary day and I often accessories myself with my signature hot pink rain boots and yellow polka dot umbrella.

At this very moment, what are you most grateful for?

Without a doubt, I’m most grateful for my family, friends and incredibly supportive fiancé. I went through a rather bitter divorce a number of years ago and I don’t know where I would be without their constant love and support. Each of them have encouraged me to follow my heart, pursue my dreams and never look back.

It’s so nice to have a career you love, and I think it sounds just perfect. I get antsy really quickly if I’m doing  the same thing for too long, so I love that you’re able to switch from one aspect of a project to another and always feel like your work is fresh and exciting!

I’m always impressed by anyone who can make a living doing what they truly love – kudos!
