Hello, dear readers. Inherent in the mission statement of The Bright Side Project is the unspoken belief that to “Do What You Love, Love What You Do” is an absolutely essential component in creating a happy and healthy lifestyle. Every now and then, we will ask our contributors to answer a few short questions on the ideas of happiness, creativity and sunshine. We hope these rays of light help inspire you to find the sunshine in your day, today and everyday.
Today we are honored to introduce you to Nancy from Le Petit Paillette.
Please introduce yourself to our readers and explain a little bit about your business.
My name is Nancy and I am the owner and designer of Le Petit Paillette.
LPP is a small, handmade jewelry studio based just outside of Philadelphia. Creativity has always been in my life and I have always loved working with my hands. In my fashion/textile studies at university, I really grew to love fabrics, textures, colors and prints. LPP focuses on creating a balance between contrasting components. For example, many of my pieces use varying textures with clashing colors and prints. A lot of the African trade beads I source are intentionally beaded with dissimilar beads, textures and colors – characteristic of African beads. I love that. Most of the time I try to bead them as is and work the rest of the design around that.
We believe that one of the ways to achieve happiness is to “Do what you love, love what you do.” How does this philosophy apply to your life?
It is very important to do what you love and love what you do. Most of our lives are spent working and life is just too darn short. Of course, reality kicks in for many and not all of us can sell friendship bracelets to support a family of five, but I feel it is still important to have at least some sort of outlet. So don’t toss your passion completely aside. I don’t have a family of five but making jewelry is my outlet and I don’t know what else I would be doing if I didn’t have this (probably working in a cubicle somewhere).
Our mission here at The Bright Side Project is to spread sunshine on a daily basis because we firmly that life is (still) beautiful. Where do you find beauty and inspiration?
As a maker, creator, artist or designer it is extremely important to find inspiration. The design process and finding inspiration is probably the most challenging part for me. Usually, I can find inspiration from books, watching films, going to antique shops and flea markets, or museums. But there are many times I find inspiration when I least expect it, for example, my mother’s cheap dish scrubber that has this pretty print with amazing colors sparked an idea for the color design of one of my hand painted beads.
When making new pieces, I usually start out with something that inspired me, but in the end, most of my finished pieces are from unexpected happenings, i.e., a bad paint job, a slip of the brush, a color gone wrong, but gone right in the end.
On a dreary day, what do you do to infuse your life with a little bit of sunshine?
Good company, good music, good food with good drinks and occasionally video games. Rainy days I find soothing and I love wintertime.
What are you most grateful for?
I feel very blessed to be where I am. It took MANY ups and downs to get here, but, it also took many ups and downs to realize just how lucky I am. I’m grateful for my supportive family and friends. I’m most grateful we all have our health and get to be in each others lives.
