Hello, dear readers. Inherent in the mission statement of The Bright Side Project is the unspoken belief that to “Do What You Love, Love What You Do” is an absolutely essential component in creating a happy and healthy lifestyle. Every now and then, we will ask our contributors to answer a few short questions on the ideas of happiness, creativity and sunshine. We hope these rays of light help inspire you to find the sunshine in your day, today and everyday.
Today we are honored to introduce you to Michelle from Michelle Starbuck Designs.
Please introduce yourself to our readers and explain a little bit about your business.
Hello! My name is Michelle Starbuck Amos and I have been designing jewelry for my eponymous line since 2005. I began making jewelry from lots off broken vintage jewelry I bought on Ebay. I loved sorting through the tangled messes and finding the good stuff that could be salvaged to make something new. For many years I only sources small quantities of beads and findings, so I made a lot of one of a kind pieces. But I wanted to be able to expand my business and create an actual jewelry collection. I did a lot of research and found new resources for vintage deadstock findings. I fell in love with the brass findings in particular and that has been the basis of my collection for the past year.
We believe that one of the ways to achieve happiness is to “Do what you love, love what you do.” How does this philosophy apply to your life?
This is definitely a motto that I can relate to. I like to be busy working on something at all times. Right now I just have week nights and the weekends to make jewelry and work on prints and cards for the business I have with my husband (Right Brain Drifts) since I still have a full time job which I really love. Eventually, I would like to have my own shop so I can sell stuff I make and support other local artists, but for now, I’m pretty content right where I am.
Sometimes I wonder what other people do that aren’t trying to run a creative business (or two) in their free time after work. I make things because I can’t imagine it any other way.
Our mission here at The Bright Side Project is to spread sunshine on a daily basis because we firmly that life is (still) beautiful. Where do you find beauty and inspiration?
I’m more of a city girl than a country girl. Chicago is a city with amazing architecture, so it’s hard not to let some of that find it’s way into my designs. I love walking around the industrial areas on the west side and looking through the windows of old factories because I can make up a story about what used to go on inside. I love everything that is old and tells a story. I’ve always been that way. When I was little, I was given the choice between an old encyclopedia collection and a brand new one. I picked the old one because it seemed more valuable to me since it had been used more. I think that’s why I would rather use vintage materials than new ones. I like researching to find out what everything was originally used for.
On a dreary day, what do you do to infuse your life with a little bit of sunshine?
A good movie, earl grey tea, and something to keep my hands busy- maybe baking, painting or knitting. I’m not good at sitting still.
What are you most grateful for?
Air conditioning and our new apartment that my husband and I are moving to in August!
