Today we are honored to introduce you to Carol from yorktown road.
Please introduce yourself to our readers and explain a little bit about your business.
Hi, my name is Carol Gilbert and yorktown road product is produced in my Northern California workshop. I design linen bags and pillows that are very sculptural and colorful yet are really quite simple in form and useful for every day. The colors are hand-dyed and the textures are freeform. I don’t try to force the designs to be a specific dimension or rigid shape. I work with the cut of fabric I have and let it guide me allowing each piece has it’s own character and personality.
We believe that one of the ways to achieve happiness is to “Do what you love, love what you do.” How does this philosophy apply to your life?
I truly enjoy the work that I do and feel so fortunate that I can invest my time and energy doing what I love. If I am going to spend a large percent of my life doing something, then it should be something that makes me happy. If I’m happy, it passes on to everyone around me.
Our mission here at The Bright Side Project is to spread sunshine on a daily basis because we firmly believe that life is (still) beautiful. Where do you find beauty and inspiration?
Everywhere. It’s usually something many would find ugly, imperfect, plain or something often overlooked but somehow it will draw my attention and lead me to think about it’s history, it’s purpose, shape, form and color. My favorite pieces of inspiration are from my kids… They will often point things out or describe an object in a manner that I would never consider which will lead me to look further at the item or think about it differently, whatever “it” may be. They give me all sorts of artwork as well as rocks, seed pods and a variety of unusual items they find and bring them home because they know I will find them interesting. Many of my texture designs are a direct result of the items they have given me.
On a dreary day, what do you do to infuse your life with a little bit of sunshine?
Those are the best days to listen to all my favorite music playlists while dyeing fabric / creating new color formulas. The music keeps me energized and the colors always seem to lift me up and brighten the day.
